Description
Italo Calvino's beloved, intricately crafted novel about an Emperor's travels—a brilliant journey across far-off places and distant memory.
"Cities, like dreams, are made of desires and fears, even if the thread of their discourse is secret, their rules are absurd, their perspectives deceitful, and everything conceals something else." In a garden sit the aged Kublai Khan and the young Marco Polo—Mongol emperor and Venetian traveler. Kublai Khan has sensed the end of his empire coming soon. Marco Polo diverts his host with stories of the cities he has seen in his travels around the empire: cities and memory, cities and desire, cities and designs, cities and the dead, cities and the sky, trading cities, hidden cities. As Marco Polo unspools his tales, the emperor detects these fantastic places are more than they appear.

General Note
" ... Wayne Thiebaud had the idea for drawings of cities that would be invisible until the reader took the action of turning the page. The concept involved printing his drawings on transparent sheets in different colors of inks, each matching the color of the following sheet. The images are revealed only when the transparent sheet is turned back over onto the preceding page, a white sheet with printed text on it, allowing the drawing and the words to read together ... "--Prospectus.
General Note
" ... Andrew Hoyem devised a metal binding with U-posts, so that the leaves (unjoined pages), drilled with holes for the posts, are turned over the posts in sequence. The book has only a back cover, supporting the four U-posts, and a lid, in the place of a front cover, fabricated with anodized aluminum. The lid has four slots through which the U-posts rise. A locking pin of aluminum rod slips through the hoops securing the lid to the base ... "--Prospectus.
