Description

The instant New York Times bestseller!

"Sublime...Colgan infuses her latest book with humor, wit, suspense and a perfectly cast love triangle."—USA Today

"The Christmas Bookshop is literary hot chocolate with a bourbon shot: hot, sweet but with a surprising emotional kick."—The Times (UK)

Perfect for the holidays! A brand-new heartwarming Christmas novel from the beloved New York Times bestselling author of The Bookshop on the Corner and Christmas at the Island Hotel.

Laid off from her department store job, Carmen has perilously little cash and few options. The prospect of spending Christmas with her perfect sister Sofia, in Sofia's perfect house with her perfect children and her perfectly ordered yuppie life does not appeal.

Frankly, Sofia doesn't exactly want her prickly sister Carmen there either. But Sofia has yet another baby on the way, a mother desperate to see her daughters get along, and a client who needs help revitalizing his shabby old bookshop. So Carmen moves in and takes the job.

Thrown rather suddenly into the inner workings of Mr. McCredie's ancient bookshop on the picturesque streets of historic Edinburgh, Carmen is intrigued despite herself. The store is dusty and disorganized but undeniably charming. Can she breathe some new life into it in time for Christmas shopping? What will happen when a famous and charismatic author takes a sudden interest in the bookshop—and Carmen? And will the Christmas spirit be enough to help heal her fractured family?

      • content:

The Christmas Bookshop is literary hot chocolate with a bourbon shot: hot, sweet but with a surprising emotional kick. Colgan has woven together the ingredients for a fiendishly addictive festive romantic comedy." — The Times (UK)

"Colgan's new Edinburgh-set Christmas novel is full of references to books, descriptions of the twisty insides of a bookshop, and fun details about Scotland, Quakerism, and the centuries-old Great Yew Tree of Ormiston. Get ready to root for these charming characters as they bungle their way toward a merry Christmas." — Library Journal (starred review)

"Colgan's writing is gentle and tender... At the heart of The Christmas Bookshop are the important connections we make with others and the reality that we don't have just the family we were born into; we also have the family that we create through those we come to love. And in every charming story that Colgan writes, we end up feeling that those characters who grace her pages have become so familiar and dear to us that they are family." — Book Reporter

"The Christmas Bookshop was a feel-good holiday novel about a group of people—some related, some not—who learned what family truly means, what they themselves were capable of, and how Christmas can be a magical time of the year...[By] the final page, readers will be happy with how everyone pulls together in a time of need and the amount of joy and love that shines through Colgan's storytelling." — Harlequin Junkie

"[Jenny Colgan] has a breezy, lighthearted writing style which always makes her books a pleasure to read. And she does a wonderful job of capturing life during the holidays and infusing it with all the imperfections and delights which make up the season. She left me longing to decorate and drink cocoa." — All About Romance

"Sublime...Colgan infuses her latest book with humor, wit, suspense and a perfectly cast love triangle." — USA Today

Colgan, who's had Christmas hits for four years running, introduces us to Carmen, just out of a job and not exactly thrilled to be moving in with has-it-all sister Sofia in Edinburgh. Sofia isn't thrilled either, but with another baby on the way, she could use the help, and she's got a client who needs a retail assistant for his backwater bookstore. Can Carmen bring sparkle to the store in time for the Christmas sales rush, and what about that classic good boy-bad boy decision she must make regarding romance? With a 100,000-copy paperback and 30,000-copy hardcover first printing.

Colgan's (Sunrise by the Sea) new Edinburgh-set Christmas novel is full of references to books, descriptions of the twisty insides of a bookshop, and fun details about Scotland, Quakerism, and the centuries-old Great Yew Tree of Ormiston. Carmen and her older sister Sophia have struggled to find peace in their sibling relationship since childhood. Now Carmen is nearing 30 and has lost the only job she's ever had, at a local department store. Carmen moves in with the very pregnant Sophia to help care for her nieces and nephew and takes a new job working for one of Sophia's clients, a bookshop owner in Edinburgh. Carmen will help Mr. McCredie try to save his bookshop and make it profitable again, while also working on her familial relationships--and maybe finding a little romance of her own before the Christmas season ends. Colgan describes the sweet transformation of a dusty bookshop, mirroring Carmen's own development into a confident businesswoman and cherished family member, with a few laughs along the way. VERDICT Get ready to root for these charming characters as they bungle their way toward a merry Christmas.--Stacey Hayman, Rocky River P.L., OH
