Certain Dark Things: A Novel
(Adobe EPUB eBook, Kindle Book, OverDrive Read)
From Silvia Moreno-Garcia, the New York Times bestselling author of Mexican Gothic, comes Certain Dark Things, a pulse-pounding neo-noir that reimagines vampire lore.
Welcome to Mexico City, an oasis in a sea of vampires. Domingo, a lonely garbage-collecting street kid, is just trying to survive its heavily policed streets when a jaded vampire on the run swoops into his life. Atl, the descendant of Aztec blood drinkers, is smart, beautiful, and dangerous. Domingo is mesmerized.
Atl needs to quickly escape the city, far from the rival narco-vampire clan relentlessly pursuing her. Her plan doesn't include Domingo, but little by little, Atl finds herself warming up to the scrappy young man and his undeniable charm. As the trail of corpses stretches behind her, local cops and crime bosses both start closing in.
Vampires, humans, cops, and criminals collide in the dark streets of Mexico City. Do Atl and Domingo even stand a chance of making it out alive? Or will the city devour them all?

Moreno-Garcia’s action-packed second standalone novel (after Signal to Noise) brings myths from multiple cultures into focus as different, coexisting types of vampires get tangled up in the drug wars of near-future Mexico, setting the stage for a bloody and engrossing story of rival families. Mexico City has done its best to ban vampires from entry, but 17-year-old Domingo, a trash picker, manages to find one: 23-year-old Atl. She pays Domingo to let her briefly feed on him; struck by her beauty, he works his way further into her life. Domingo and Atl grow closer while trying to protect each other from the vicious Godoy family, who killed Atl’s family and are now after her. Few of the characters would be considered likable, but they’re more interesting for their flaws. A bittersweet, satisfying ending confirms that Moreno-Garcia is an author to watch. With the runaway success of Mexican Gothic, there has been a boom in interest in Moreno-Garcia's work. Vampire fiction fans will sink their teeth into this fast-paced reissue, originally published in 2016, which follows Domingo, a sanitation worker in Mexico City. He is obsessed with vampires and soon has more than he can handle when he gets tangled up with a beautiful vampire woman named Atl who has ties to Aztec mythology. Vampires are out in the open in this universe, and Mexico City is supposed to be a vampire-free territory, but the novel soon demonstrates why this is not quite the case. This is a unique, Own Voices take on vampires. It may remind readers of John Ajvide Lindqvist's Let the Right One In, particularly the dynamic between humans and vampires. VERDICT This vampire crime thriller with romance elements will have wide appeal, especially among the author's many fans.--Anita Siraki, Toronto
