When U.S. Marshal Winston Newman asks Anita Blake to come to a tiny town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, she arrives to find Bobby Marchand, a wereleopard, waiting in the local jail, with a warrant of execution on the way. All of the evidence points toward Bobby killing his uncle, and Bobby doesn't deny committing the murder--even if he cannot remember doing it. Yet Newman still thinks something is wrong, and with Anita's expertise the facts start to reveal a shaky foundation. With little time and heightened fear of supernaturals spilling through the community, Anita will need to catch the real killer before brutal justice is served on a possibly innocent man. To do this, she will have to call on some of her fellow Marshals for assistance, including her worst nightmare and nemesis, Olaf. VERDICT Blake's 27th outing (after Serpentine) is a crafty murder mystery wrapped in plenty of fur and fury. Fans of the series will be pleased to see Anita Blake's return.
