Description

British spy Emma Makepeace goes undercover on a Russian oligarch’s superyacht, where she’s one wrong move away from a watery grave, in this electrifying thriller from the author of Alias Emma.
“Delivers everything fans of spy fiction could want: an absorbing plot, shadowy characters, page-gripping tension.”—The Washington Post (Best Books of the Year)

An MI6 operative is found dead, locked in a suitcase inside his own apartment. Despite an exhaustive search, no fingerprints are found at the scene. Emma Makepeace and her handler, Ripley, know an assassination when they see one, and such an obvious murder can mean only one thing: Someone is sending a message.
As she digs into his past, Emma discovers that the unfortunate spy had been investigating two Russian oligarchs based in London. He’d become obsessed with the idea that the two were spies, aided by a third man—whose identity he had yet to uncover. When he shared his findings within MI6 in the weeks before he died, the response came back fast and clear: Drop the investigation and move on. Had he uncovered a secret that cost him his life?
To pick up where he left off without ending up in a suitcase of her own, Emma goes undercover on one of the oligarch’s million-dollar yachts, scheduled to set sail from the Côte d’Azur to Monaco. Under other circumstances, this would be a dream vacation. But if Emma’s real identity gets discovered, it’s a death sentence.
As Emma’s work reveals secrets she’d be safer not knowing, the danger ratchets up. The killer may be closer to home than any of them imagined, and Emma won’t be safe until he—or she—is caught.

        August 4, 2023

After a numbers analyst for MI6 is found horribly murdered in his apartment, Emma Makepeace--a spy in a secret government agency so secret that it doesn't even have a name--is one of the agents assigned to investigate. The victim is the son of a lord, and Emma's boss Ripley is under a lot of pressure to solve the case. Emma soon realizes that the dead man was working on a closed case involving chemical weapons, wealthy Russians, and a possible double agent in British intelligence service. In order to uncover the traitor and stop the further sale of chemical weapons, Emma goes undercover on a yacht belonging to a Russian oligarch. Suspected right from her first moments on board, Emma unfortunately gives the oligarch and his henchman more ammunition to distrust her with her clumsy spying. Glass's follow-up to series starter Alias Emma is a generic, predictable spy thriller. Readers will easily guess who the traitor is and grow frustrated with Emma for not being able to follow the clear clues to their identity. VERDICT Recommended only for libraries where the first book was popular.--Lynnanne Pearson

Starred review from October 9, 2023
Intrepid spy Emma Makepeace hits the high seas in this gripping sequel to 2022’s Alias Emma from Glass (a pseudonym for YA author Christi Daugherty). At 28, Emma’s star is rising in the Agency, an elite, ultra-secret British intelligence collective. Emma learned the tricks of the trade from her grieving mother after her Russian father was killed for spying on behalf of the British. When an MI6 operative who’d been pursuing two Russian oligarchs trading in dangerous biological weapons is found dead in his apartment, the Agency decides to take over the investigation. Emma, who’s on a lifelong quest to avenge her father’s death, gladly accepts the dicey undercover job of joining the staff of a yacht owned by one of the Russians as it sails from the Cote d’Azur to Monaco. Operating without backup, Emma must prove the oligarchs guilty of arms dealing and unmask their third partner, whom she comes to suspect may be an MI6 mole. Enriching the narrative with meticulous spycraft, sound character development, and exquisitely realized settings, Glass has delivered an un-put-downable winner. Here’s hoping this series has a long life. Agent: Madeleine Milburn, Madeleine Milburn Literary.
