Description
New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh takes us on a new adventure in this next novel of the Psy-Changeling Trinity series...
The end of Silence was supposed to create a better world for future generations. But trust is broken, and the alliance between Psy, Changeling, and human is thin. The problems that led to Silence are back in full force. Because Silence fixed nothing, just hid the problems.
This time, the Psy have to find a real answer to their problems—if one exists. Or their race will soon go extinct in a cascade of violence. The answer begins with an empath who is attuned to monsters—and who is going to charm a wolf into loving her despite his own demons.

Once again immersing readers in a richly imagined world where psychic Psy, shape-shifting Changelings, and humans coexist in uneasy harmony, Singh’s third Psy Changeling Trinity novel (after Ocean Light) delights with lovingly drawn characters. Memory was eight years old when she was kidnapped by a serial killer, who held her in isolation for years so he could abuse her unique empathic gift. Alexei, wolf Changeling and lieutenant of the powerful SnowDancer pack, has isolated himself emotionally from his pack, operating under the impression he’s cursed. When he discovers a devastated Memory deep in the heart of SnowDancer territory, he feels called to protect the small, strong survivor at all costs. This slightly futuristic love story blends well with the larger plot focused on a society rediscovering itself. Familiar faces from previous books are artfully woven in to welcome returning readers, and if the story feels a bit familiar too, it’s still a fine serving of literary comfort food. Agent: Nephele Tempest, Knight Agency.

After saving a woman from a serial killer, a wolf changeling will do anything to keep her safe, but the stakes get higher when her unique powers may signal the worldwide rise of aggressive rogue energy. Nearing the first anniversary of his brother's death, Alexei Harte picks up an overwhelming psychic broadcast of grief and discovers an empath imprisoned in an underground bunker. When he rescues her, at first her only emotions seem to be rage and grief for her recently deceased cat. But as Memory begins to trust Alexei and the world he helps her enter, her conflicted, negative emotions begin to calm. The other empaths she meets help her understand that her gifts are unique and powerful and reframe them beyond her violent past which forced her to use them to help a psychopath. The more they work with her, the more they come to believe that she might be particularly positioned to help strengthen the complicated PsyNet, the vast psychic network on which the Psy depend to keep them connected and healthy. Alexei, meanwhile, is wrestling with the death of his brother, who went violently rogue one year earlier. He's definitely interested in making Memory his mate but worries he carries the rogue genes that threaten her even as he's trying to keep her safe from a variety of other dangers. The Psy/Changeling Trinity series continues with another complex, fascinating angle to the fall of Silence and its manifestations. Alexei's family represents the rogue component in the Changeling world, while Memory both represents and acts as the first line of defense against a rising rogue element within the Psy. Favorite alpha characters weave through the story, meeting the new challenge with their typical intelligence, flexibility, and collaboration. Another Psy/Changeling page-turner from the brilliant Singh.

The end of Silence, imposed on the brainy Psy to control their emotions, is supposed to make for a better world, but the alliance among Psy, Changeling, and human is worn-silk fragile. Fearing that the Psy face a blistering end, one empath decides that it's time to cozy up to a wolf. Next in the "Psy-Changeling Trinity," part of the New York Times best-selling "Psy-Changeling" series.

Starred review from June 1, 2019

Drawn by telepathic waves of crushing grief while out on patrol, Alexei of the SnowDancer wolf pack is shocked to find a fragile, badly abused, yet strangely fierce Psy Empath in a cleverly hidden subterranean prison, mourning the loss of her cat. Alexei rescues her, but Memory knows she is no ordinary empath; since childhood, she has been the source of a psychopathic killer's dark power. Though she is now free and protected by Alexei and his pack, she knows she's a danger to them all because it's only a matter of time before her captor hunts her down. Attraction flares between Memory and Alexei, and though he has no plans to mate, she is beginning to wear him down. A cast of well-developed characters and several subplots add layers to a story that is as deep as it is playful. VERDICT Stratagems, insanity, and violence are here tempered by bright humor and the warmth and importance of family, pack, and belonging. Another hands-down winner that expands Singh's brilliantly conceived world. Singh (Ocean Light) lives in New Zealand. [See Prepub Alert, 12/6/18.]
