My mother tells me I was born a long time ago, but I'm not so sure—my mother can't be trusted. I do know that I was raised in Texas on barbeque, Mexican food and beer. Each day I sit in the front window at my favorite Panera and play with my imaginary friends. My SO is a psychologist and he tells me that many of his colleagues would consider me an annuity. I can live with that. Thankfully, he can too. I write a mystery series set in Las Vegas—funny, sexy and romantic. I've been told they are comedic thrillers—sounds like an oxymoron to me, but you get the drift.

At the start of Coonts’s lively fourth Lucky O’Toole novel (after 2012’s So Damn Lucky), a young woman turns up dead on the hood of a sports car at the Ferrari dealership housed within Las Vegas’s swanky Babylon casino resort, where Lucky is the head of customer relations. Putting out fires is all part of a day’s work for Lucky, but after the appearance of a second body and then a third, she has to wonder whether she can handle all the drama. In addition, she must deal with her qualms about her burgeoning romantic relationship with the Babylon’s new chef, Jean-Charles, a charming Frenchman; the dogged persistence of her old flame, Teddie; and a dark-haired mystery woman in a dead woman’s red shoes. Lucky’s sass and snark make for fun reading, but the lack of urgency in her actions to find the killer dampens the mystery. Agent: Susan Gleason, Susan Gleason Literary Agency.
