        Grades 8-12 Patterson and McGinnis' spin-off of the best-selling Maximum Ride books continues in this thrilling second installment that follows Hawk, daughter of Max Ride, as she and her mother strive to become the heroes their city needs. True to the original series, Hawk and Max are winged human-avian hybrids who have endured torturous experiments and now seek to protect their Flock from a mysterious enemy who has taken over their city. Hawk's voice is likable, and her stubborn determination admirable. Readers will relate to her butting heads with her mother, but when it becomes clear that the Flock may not be the only group of human-hybrid experiments, Hawk and Max will have to put aside their differences and work together in order to protect their loved ones. This book continues the tradition of the series with its consistent and clear dialogue, science-fantasy-inspired elements, and plenty of action and betrayal to keep thriller fans sated.
