Description
Special Agent Bella Jordan is assigned to investigate a series of murders in West Texas that are linked to the Spider Rock Treasure. Since she spent the first fifteen years of her life in this area, FBI authorities believe she can get the job done. What they don’t know is that one of their prime suspects—a man who’s been on their wanted list for years—is deeply connected to Bella’s past.
The other prime suspect is Carr Sullivan, the man who owns the ranch where the murders occurred. Carr was once one of the wealthiest businessmen in Dallas and has a shady past a mile long. But it appears he’s turned his life around. Can Bella trust him, or is he just trying to cover his tracks?
As Bella probes deeper into the case, threats on her own life convince her the killer is someone she knows. But it soon becomes clear he’s not working alone, and she’ll need to face the past she’s tried so desperately to forget in order to solve the case and prevent more murders.

A series of murders in West Texas force Special Agent Bella Jordan into a race against time as she searches for the killer amid threats to her own life. Her two prime suspects are a man with ties to her past and another with a rap sheet, who swears he has turned his life around. When it becomes obvious the killer is someone who knows her, Bella has to wonder whom, if anyone, she can trust. VERDICT Series fans and readers who prefer their romantic suspense without lots of torrid sex will enjoy this third series entry (after Breach of Trust and Sworn To Protect).

FBI Agent Bella Jordan is sent to the stark west Texas of her unhappy childhood when three men turn up dead on the High Butte Ranch belonging to Carr Sullivan. Former high-roller Carr is a prime suspect along with Brandt Richardson, a serial killer with whom Bella has a past. The three victims were searching for a legendary lost Spanish treasure, the same lost treasure that caused Bellas unhappy adolescence, as her father was so obsessed with it, he was willing to sell her, at age 15, to Richardson. Bella finds herself believing in Carr, who experienced a conversion when his fianc'e died of a drug overdose five years earlier. Now the murders on his property have imperiled his dream of creating a home for troubled boys. As Bella defies FBI procedures in investigating the crime, the death toll mounts, and she begins to fall for Carr. The third romantic-suspense thriller in Mills Call of Duty series will appeal to readers who like a stout dose of Christianity and prayer along with the action.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2010, American Library Association.)
