The Sauvignon Secret
(OverDrive MP3 Audiobook, OverDrive Listen)
When Lucie Montgomery finds the body of prominent wine merchant Paul Noble hanging from a beam in his art studio not far from her Virginia vineyard, she is unwittingly dragged into Noble's murky past. Once a member of the secretive "Mandrake Society," Noble might have aided in a cover-up of the deaths forty-years ago of a disabled man and a beautiful young biochemist involved in classified government research.
A seemingly innocent favor for an old friend of her French grandfather's sends Lucie to California where she teams up with Quinn Santori, who walked out of Lucie's life months earlier. Soon Lucie and Quinn are embroiled in a deadly cat-and-mouse game that takes them from glittering San Francisco to the legendary vineyards of Napa and Sonoma, then back home to Virginia as they try to discover whether a killer may be seeking vengeance for the long-ago deaths.
As Lucie and Quinn struggle to uncover the mystery, they must also decide whether they have a future together. Blending an intriguing mystery with an absorbing plot, vivid characters, and a richly evoked setting, The Sauvignon Secret should be savored like a glass of fine wine.

June 13, 2011
In Crosby's solid sixth wine country mystery (after 2010's Viognier Vendetta), the apparent suicide of Paul Noble, a wine importer and distributor with lots of enemies, takes Virginia vineyard owner Lucie Montgomery to the vineyards of California's Napa and Sonoma valleys in search of answers. Lucie and her former lover, winemaker Quinn Santori, dig through the past of a group of young biochemists from the Nixon era, who called themselves the Mandrake Society. Noble's death turns out not to be the only mysterious one connected to the society, but it may hold the key to a coverup, a murder, and a determined killer. Meanwhile, Lucie and Quinn must deal with the question of their own future. Can they mend their strained relationship? While the element of intrigue falls a bit flat, wine aficionados and those fond of the San Francisco Bay Area will be well rewarded.

- content: In the sixth of Crosby's Wine Country Mysteries, Lucie, a vineyard owner in Loudoun County, Virginia, finds herself embroiled in crime, scandal, and romantic possibilities when her wine distributor is murdered. Narrator Rachel Warren paces the action well and conveys the emotions of Lucie's friends who are possible suspects. Her characterization of Lucie's niece is charming, and her French characters sound plausible. Lucie, however, is portrayed as speaking like a hillbilly, not like the resident of a sophisticated outer suburb of Washington. Listeners who can get past the incongruous accent will enjoy a competent whodunit, a love story, and beautifully described wine lore. D.L.G. (c) AudioFile 2011, Portland, Maine
