Description

Best-selling author Rick Riordan presents Yoon Ha Lee's companion to the best-selling and award-winning DRAGON PEARL, another space opera inspired by Korean mythology, this time told from the point of view of a nonbinary tiger spirit.

"A zesty mix of Korean folklore, magic, and science fiction that will leave you longing for more adventures in the Thousand Worlds!"—Rick Riordan, intro to DRAGON PEARL

"With crisp dialogue, a winning protagonist and a propulsive plot, this tale is enormously entertaining."— New York Times Book Review of DRAGON PEARL

Sebin, a young tiger spirit from the Juhwang Clan, wants nothing more than to join the Thousand World Space Forces and, like their Uncle Hwan, captain a battle cruiser someday. But when Sebin's acceptance letter finally arrives, it's accompanied by the shocking news that Hwan has been declared a traitor. Apparently the captain abandoned his duty to steal a magical artifact, the Dragon Pearl, and his whereabouts are still unknown. Sebin hopes to help clear their hero's name and restore honor to the clan.

Nothing goes according to plan, however. As soon as Sebin arrives for orientation, they are met by a special investigator named Yi and Yi's assistant, a girl named Min. Yi informs Sebin that they must immediately report to the ship Haetae and await further instructions. Sebin finds this highly unusual, but soon all protocol is forgotten when there's an explosion on the ship, the crew is knocked out, and the communication system goes down. It's up to Sebin, three other cadets, and Yi and Min to determine who is sabotaging the battle cruiser. When Sebin is suddenly accused of collaborating with the enemy, the cadet realizes that Min is the most dangerous foe of all...

Yoon Ha Lee brilliantly turns the tables on DRAGON PEARL in another unputdownable sci-fi adventure about what honor really means.

The question of honor versus family loyalty plays out in a thrilling Korean-inspired space opera. In this stand-alone companion novel to Dragon Pearl (2019), readers are introduced to a new family of characters, the Juhwang Clan of tiger spirits. Juhwang Sebin, a nonbinary 13-year-old who can shift between their human and orange tiger spirit forms, is accepted into Space Forces Command as a cadet on the same day their uncle, Capt. Hwan, is accused of high treason. The young cadet is called into action and then into question, as clan loyalty and professional duty collide. Their assigned battle cruiser, the Haetae, is sabotaged before Cadet Sebin can even be sworn in. Under the watchful eye of Special Investigator Yi and their assistant, Kim Min, a teenage girl, Sebin and three other cadets who are survivors of the blast must determine who has incapacitated the ship and crew. The tension mounts as Sebin struggles with the accusation that their admired Uncle Hwan is leading the insurrection and they hope to prove them innocent. Throughout, Lee develops an important thread that examines hard decisions when family tradition and personal integrity clash, an emotional dilemma that will resonate with many readers. The Thousand Worlds universe continues to thrill with the lure of Korean mythology, the action of space battle, and the personal struggle to act with honor. Fans will demand more. Weaves together science fiction and cultural elements with tremendous appeal. (pronunciation guide) (Science fantasy. 8-12)

Grades 3-7 This companion novel to Lee's Dragon Pearl (2012) follows a nonbinary tiger spirit named Sebin whose dream is to join the Space Forces and become the captain of a ship like their uncle. When Sebin's acceptance letter finally arrives, so, too, does the news that Uncle Hwan has been stripped of his title as a captain after being declared a traitor in his pursuit of the legendary Dragon Pearl. Sebin quickly realizes that this obvious misunderstanding will greatly hinder their chance to achieve their dream as their family comes under scrutiny. Determined to make a good impression and clear their family name, Sebin climbs aboard the Haetae battle cruiser on their first day as a space cadet, but their plans very quickly go awry. With a delightful mix of Korean mythology and science fiction, Lee expands on the intriguing world of his previous novel to create another exhilarating adventure with a new precocious protagonist. Fans of Dragon Pearl will enjoy this dive back into the Thousand Worlds universe.

Gr 3-7-This sequel to The Dragon Pearl follows Sebin, a nonbinary tiger spirit from the Juhwang Clan, as they train to become a battle cruiser captain like their favorite Unce Hwan. Unfortunately, news of Sebin's acceptance into the Thousand Worlds Space Forces Cadet Program comes at the same time as news that their Uncle Hwan has been accused of treason. Sebin travels from their home planet of Yonggi to Starbase Borasaekbam, where they've been summoned, only to find that their uncle has stowed away on the ship and plans to take it under his control-with the help of Min, a fox spirit (whom fans will recognize from the first book), and a group of stowaway mercenaries. Sebin swore allegiance to the Tiger Clan before they left home, but the Space Forces will require them to protect the Thousand Worlds-and they'll need to decide where their loyalties truly lie before the starship Haetae reaches its destination. Themes of personal integrity, courage, friendship, and loyalty are delivered in a fast-paced plot filled with engaging twists, turns, and near-misses, though at times they come at the expense of character development. Nonbinary characters and women in positions of military power are refreshingly commonplace in this original space opera interwoven with Korean mythology. VERDICT Recommended for collections where readers appreciated The Dragon Pearl.-Amy Fellows
