   • bioText: Herman Melville was born in New York City in 1819. When his father died, he was forced to leave school and find work. After passing through some minor clerical jobs, the eighteen-year-old young man shipped out to sea, first on a short cargo trip, then, at twenty-one, on a three-year South Sea whaling venture. From the experiences accumulated on this voyage would come the material for his early books, Typee (1846) and Omoo (1847), as well as for such masterpieces as Moby-Dick (1851), Pierre (1852), The Piazza Tales (1856), and Billy Budd, Sailor, and Other Stories (posthumous, 1924). Though the first two novels—popular romantic adventures—sold well, Melville's more serious writing failed to attract a large audience, perhaps because it attacked the current philosophy of transcendentalism and its espoused "self-reliance." (As he made clear in the savagely comic The Confidence Man (1857), Melville thought very little of Emersonian philosophy.) He spent his later years working as a customs inspector on the New York docks, writing only poems comprising Battle-Pieces (1866). He died in 1891, leaving Billy Budd, Sailor, and Other Stories unpublished.
     
     Paul Boehmer appeared in the acclaimed Broadway production of Oscar Wilde’s An Ideal Husband and on television in Frasier, Judging Amy, Guiding Light, Star Trek, and All My Children. He loves narrating audiobooks, and he lives and works in Los Angeles, California.

   • content: Despite its flaws, Paul Boehmer's reading of MOBY-DICK merits our consideration and is worthy of acclaim. His odd pronunciation of some words (i.e., the unconventional way he accents syllables) is jarring. He renders some characters (Father Mapple, Bildad, Peleg) more vividly than others (Stubb, Flask, Starbuck, and strangely enough, Ishmael). It's difficult to avoid drifting when his Ishmael drones on, pseudo-scientifically, about whaling and the whale. But his Ahab makes it all worthwhile. Boehmer avoids the temptation to reduce the PEQUOD's captain to caricature and presents us with a figure of baleful majesty: simultaneously appalling and alluring.    • content: In this superb abridgment, the richness of Melville's prose pours out like thick cream from an iron pitcher. Haunting phrases and word-painted, wild scenes are mixed with selections of classical music, mostly somber, selected by a skilled producer. Bill Bailey, a British actor, sounds as American as the whaling men he describes, a low, intense presence with distinct differentiation of the characters. His Captain Ahab is memorable, calling to mind Gregory Peck's movie portrayal. I miss the end-of-side announcements found on most audiobooks but count this as one of the best titles I've reviewed.
