Description

Michelle Knudsen revisits Trelian in a thrilling follow-up fantasy about a princess with an uncanny link to a dragon and a uniquely talented young mage.
The hundred-year war with Kragnir is over, and Meg will soon be named the princess-heir of Trelian. But her connection to her dragon, Jakl, is making her parents' subjects uneasy. Will they ever accept this dragon princess as their future queen? It doesn't help that Meg is suffering horrible nightmares and sudden, uncontrollable rages—and with the link joining them, Jakl is feeling the rages, too. Meg is desperate to talk to Calen, to see if he can help her figure out what is happening and how to stop it before she or her dragon does something terrible...
Meanwhile, Calen is having troubles of his own. He's far away, gone off with Mage Serek to receive his first true mage's mark. But his marking ceremony is disrupted by a mysterious magical attack, and ominous prophecies predict a terrifying new danger. The Magistratum's greatest enemy may soon reappear—and the other mages believe that Calen himself may have a hand in his return!
From bestselling author Michelle Knudsen, here is the thrilling fantasy follow-up to The Dragon of Trelian.

        About Me
I grew up in Staten Island, New York. Our family was small—I didn't have any brothers or sisters—but I was lucky to have some great friends who were just like family to me. (They still are!) Today I live in Brooklyn, New York, with my wonderful husband, two amazing stepdaughters, and two very silly cats.
Some of my favorite things to do are reading (especially science fiction and fantasy), taking long walks in Prospect Park, playing D&D and video games, and watching the Rangers play hockey at Madison Square Garden. I also love going to Broadway shows with my two best friends. Once upon a time I used to perform in a lot of (amateur) musical theater, mostly in high school and college and then later in community theater productions of Gilbert & Sullivan operettas. These days I don't have enough free time to go to rehearsals, so most of my singing happens at karaoke or at home with my family while my husband plays guitar. But I hope to go back to being in shows someday!
I keep trying to become a knitter but it's a slow process. I'm very good at buying yarn and starting projects—not so good at finishing them!
        About My Work
I'm the author of more than fifty books for children and young adults, including the New York Times best-selling picture book Library Lion (which Time magazine named as one of the 100 Best Children's Books of All Time!).
I love writing all kinds of things for readers of all ages. My books so far include board books, coloring and activity books, early readers, chapter books, middle-grade novels, and young adult novels. I also sometimes write short stories, including short speculative fiction for older readers. I rarely write totally realistic fiction; my favorite things to write about are those that can't happen in the regular, everyday world. I love writing about magic and dragons and monsters and adventure. My stories are also often about true friendship and loyalty and love. I try to write characters that you would want to be friends with in real life.
Three Things You Might Not Know About Me
        1. My favorite band is My Chemical Romance.
        2. When I was little I wanted to be either an animal trainer (specifically of big cats like black panthers and snow leopards) or a country singer like Dolly Parton.
        3. I'm scared of spiders, but I love snakes.

        March 15, 2012
Grades 4-7 In this strong follow-up to The Dragon of Trelian (2009), princess-heir Meg and apprentice wizard Calen again attempt to divert mage Sen Eva's plot to bring war to Trelian, this time to kingdom Lourin, which has been plagued by what look like dragon attacks. Meg is sure her dragon, Jakl, is not responsible, but the uncontrollable blind rages they both suffer suggest otherwise. Meanwhile, Calen is at the center of a looming war between mages. Sen Eva's plot proves to be plenty devious, and a tense cliffhanger ending sets a dark tone for the next book. This series is a familiar yet engaging take on traditional fantasy.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2012, American Library Association.)

        May 1, 2012
In this sequel to The Dragon of Trelian (rev. 5/09), Princess Meg is now heir to the throne, but her subjects are uneasy about her relationship with her dragon, and it only becomes worse when a neighboring king accuses the dragon of ravaging the countryside, burning fields and killing people. Meanwhile, Meg's best friend Calen has earned his mage's mark, but a mysterious, magical attack occurs during the presentation ceremony, and when his special abilities come to light it brings a cloud of suspicion upon him. Needless to say, the deposed villain from the previous book is behind all the mischief. Sen Eva is once again trying to open a portal for a powerful evil mage to return from exile, but this time she succeeds. As Meg and her allies prepare for war against the forces of Mage Krelig, he seems to have won the impetuous Calen over to his side, either by persuasion or coercion. The book ends unresolved, with a cliffhanger ending. The wonderful characters and the fluid writing compensate for the somewhat languid pacing and the lack of thematic depth. Fans will eagerly await the climactic confrontation between forces in the next book of what appears to be a trilogy. jonathan hunt
