When Dawson King, aka Chris “Flash” Hickman, goes to work for her, his plan is to uncover proof about her father’s dealings and her presumed involvement. He doesn’t expect to fall for the beautiful, brave diner owner who offers jobs and second chances to people recently released from prison. Cara suspects there are hidden depths to the intelligent, hard-working, sensitive Flash. He doesn’t act like any ex-con she knows, and, when he makes it his mission to protect her, she finds his tenderness to be as irresistible as his handsomeness. The story opens on the one-year anniversary of actress Ashley Swan's disappearance--the listener quickly learns that she is being held captive and tortured. Then, she manages to escape with a little boy in the middle of a blizzard and finds sanctuary on the isolated farm of DEA agent Beck Cooke. Marlo portrays Beck with a husky voice as he falls for Ashley. That voice helps the listener fall in love with Beck as well. Ashley's breathy voice is less appealing.
