      • content: BETSY-TACY, published in 1940, is an old-fashioned story of friendship that still succeeds with today's young readers. This, the first of Lovelace's 13 books, begins when Tacy moves into Betsy's neighborhood. Suddenly life is full of simple adventures, from picnics to paper dolls, and Betsy's talent for storytelling creates a secret life for the two 5-year-olds. Sutton Foster's reading is upbeat, reflecting the exuberance the two girls have for each other, for adventure, and for invention. Foster uses a strong voice for the inquisitive Betsy. For Tacy her portrayal is more subdued. This classic is a great shared listen for parents and children, especially for parents who grew up with these stories. S.W. (c) AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine

Welcome reissues in hardcover of two classic novels written in the 1940s about two -- and then three -- girls growing up in the Midwest at the turn of the century. The stories are written with an old-fashioned gentleness.
