Starred review from March 6, 2023
In this companion to Newbery winner New Kid and its sequel, Class Act, eighth grader Jordan Banks is excited about two things: his acceptance letter to the art school of his dreams, and traveling to Paris with his Riverdale Academy Day School classmates. But he’s also nervous; going to a new high school means leaving his best friends behind. While he has limited time to accept the new school’s offer, Jordan endeavors to disengage from admissions stress by having the time of his life in Paris. As Jordan and his friends prepare to travel abroad, however, they learn that irksome classmate Andy, who’s constantly inserting himself into their plans, will also be traveling with them. Despite various setbacks—including teachers’ credit cards not working, and Jordan and his friends being tricked into sharing a room with Andy—the group makes the most of what they believe is their last hurrah before going separate ways. With his signature laugh-out-loud storytelling, which teems with nuanced character dynamics, tender moments of acceptance and connection, and a multicultural cast, Craft offers a zestful graphic novel adventure that mixes lighthearted fare with thought-provoking observations on lasting friendship in the face of future-based anxieties. Ages 8–12. Agent: Judy Hansen, Hansen Literary.

- content: Jordan Banks and his friends are back, once again voiced by a full cast, for a year-ending trip to Paris. It's going to be great--except that the insufferable Andy's part of the group. But Paris is amazing, and the trip offers lots of opportunities for growth--even Andy's. Craft's graphic novels are known for their playful visuals, and this adaptation features clever sound effects and careful narrative enhancement to give listeners an analogous experience. However, it's less successful at fully communicating the racism Jordan and many of his friends endure, as listeners can't see the racial and ethnic diversity evident in Craft's panels. The sincerity with which the cast conveys the kids' soul-searching conversations fills in many of the gaps. A winning companion. V.S. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine

Gr 3-7-Audiences who enjoyed Craft's New Kid and Class Act as audiobooks might immediately notice an important cast change-Tarrant replaces Jesus Del Orden, who voiced Jordan in the previous titles. The kids are indeed a bit older here (although they're still in eighth grade), which means Tarrant's deeper tones might indicate Jordan's adolescent voice change. The rest of the most familiar cast members (yay to Bullock returning as Drew) gratefully remains the same. Listening is undoubtedly thorough entertainment; the usual Riverdale Academy Day School kids head to Paris for artistic, social, emotional enlightenment, complete with appropriate sound effects and expected accents. Listening, however enjoyable, can't quite provide the multilayered, impressively illuminating experience that won Craft the Newbery Medal: to see the deftly enhancing images is impossible with only the ears, such as the open passports that immediately suggest the diversity of the kids' backgrounds before the narrative even begins, or who exactly is sitting in the headmaster's office? Indeed, Craft's pictures do contain thousands of silent words. VERDICT For a thoroughly immersive read, choose the page and the audio.
