Description

Honeymooners at a posh resort receive an ominous warning with deadly consequences in the latest gripping, twisty psychological thriller from New York Times bestselling author Sophie Hannah.
Jane and William are enjoying their honeymoon at an exclusive couples-only resort...

...until Jane receives a chilling note warning her to "Beware of the couple at the table nearest to yours." At dinner that night, five other couples are present, and none of their tables is any nearer or farther away than any of the others. It's almost as if someone has set the scene in order to make the warning note meaningless—but why would anyone do that?

Jane has no idea.

But someone in this dining room will be dead before breakfast, and all the evidence will suggest that no one there that night could have possibly committed the crime.

"A cause for celebration. The Couple at the Table has everything you want in a mystery—a cryptic threat, a murder, a closed circle of suspects and an unguessable solution. Completely ingenious, entirely satisfying—a delight from start to finish." Alex Michaelides, New York Times bestselling author

"A wise and witty portrait of modern marriage and murder." — Times (UK) on The Couple at the Table

"Part whodunnit, part psychological thriller, this one will leave you looking over your shoulder and a little less trustful of those around you." — CrimeReads (Most Anticipated Books of Fall 2022) on The Couple at the Table

"Hannah builds on her suspenseful premise with well-placed clues and a superb sense of timing, all the way to a crash-and-burn ending." — New York Times Book Review on Perfect Little Children

"No one writes twisted, suspenseful novels quite like Sophie Hannah." — Liane Moriarty #1 New York Times bestselling author

"Hannah's plots are like intricate jigsaw puzzles whose pieces you cannot believe will fit together, until you see the completed picture... The fun in reading The Next to Die...isn't in learning whodunit, but in following the labyrinthine byways of its author's peculiar worldview and the twisted motives of her characters." — New York Times

"Sophie Hannah... has clearly mastered the psychological methodology [of] Gillian Flynn or Tana French. Her unreliable narrator commands our attention and even our sympathy." — NPR

Following a misjudged post gone nastily viral, popular mommy blogger Alex discovers that The Personal Assistant who knew too much about her has vanished, with USA Today best-selling author Belle shifting perspectives between the two (75,000-copy paperback and 10,000-copy hardcover first printing). In Small Game, a fiction debut from Braverman (Welcome to the Goddamn Ice Cube), survival instructor Mara lands on a reality TV show with a mixed bag of teammates hoping to win a pile of money by camping out in some undisclosed woodlands but not counting on being stranded (150,000-copy first printing). Slipped into German intelligence by the Soviets (and by Single Spy author Christie), Double Agent Alexsi Smirnoff is captured in 1943 by the British, who recruit him for their own purposes (50,000-copy first printing). In Connelly's Desert Star, LAPD detective Rene Ballard rejoins the force to run the newly minted Open-Unsolved Unit, where Harry Bosch volunteers so that he can pursue a psychopath who slaughtered an entire family (750,000-copy first printing). In this follow-up to Graham and Land's The Rising, high school seniors Alex Chin and Samantha Dixon must counter a threat to all humanity, signaled by the ascent of a Blood Moon over the vanished Mayan city of El Mirador (75,000-copy first printing). "Beware of The Couple at the Table nearest to yours" says the note to honeymooners Jane and William, but the tables at their swanky resort are all equidistant--New York Times best-selling Hannah's way of chilling protagonists and readers alike (50,000-copy first printing). Searching for a mountain caribou reportedly spotted in Washington State-- A Ghost of Caribou because this subspecies was thought extinct in the contiguous United States--wildlife biologist Alex Carter instead encounters environmental conflict and a murdered forest ranger; wildlife researcher Henderson follows up A Blizzard of Polar Bears (75,000-copy first printing). Living in the Soviet Union in 1973, above the Arctic Circle--Winterland, indeed--eight-year-old Anya is tapped as a promising gymnast even as she mourns her mother, who vanished after challenging state policies; following Meadows's LJ-starred I Will Send Rain (75,000-copy first printing). Having built a successful life for herself in London after being orphaned as a child in Paris, Amelie marries dashing billionaire Jed--and realizes when she's kidnapped that she feels less like The Prisoner now than she did in her marriage; from the mega-best-selling Paris (200,000-copy first printing). Grandson of action hero Doc Savage, nerdy professor Brandt Savage is pressed into a top-secret training program that re-creates him mentally and physically as The Perfect Assassin; following Patterson's first comic-book hero foray, The Shadow (250,000-copy paperback and 45,000-copy hardcover first printing). In Steadman's latest, emerging novelist Harry husband loves her husband, Edward, but he's one of the Holbecks--filthy rich and dangerous--and though he's tried to be shot of them, the couple is soon dragged into The Family Game. In Unger's Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six, Hannah's rich techie brother is graciously facilitating a weekend getaway for themselves, their spouses, and another couple, but an intrusive rental host, the personal chef's creepy stories, and a sneaking suspicion that someone in the group has a vendetta put a damper on things (150,000-copy first printing).

        September 12, 2022
In bestseller Hannah’s subpar 11th Spilling CID procedural (after 2019’s The Next to Die), it’s been six months since Jane Brinkwood, only daughter of Lord Brinkwood, was fatally stabbed at her father’s Tevendon Estate Resort, a British couples-only venue. Curmudgeonly Det. Constable Simon Waterhouse, who was vacationing there at the time with his long-suffering, more socially adept wife, Sgt. Charlie Zailer, took over the murder investigation. He concluded that the culprit must be among those staying at the resort, but no more than that. Lucy Dean, a fellow guest and the ex-wife of Jane’s widowed husband, badgers Waterhouse into vigorously renewing his inquiries. Jane is revealed to have been a thoroughly unpleasant person, who managed to offend and/or threaten everyone within snarling distance. For Waterhouse, who rightly describes Tevendon as “full of psychos,” the question becomes not so much who killed Jane as who wouldn’t want to. Too many daft theories, tenuous motives, irritating suspects, red herrings, and lies weigh down the plot. What starts as an irresistible puzzle becomes a disjointed, repetitive muddle. Hannah has done better. Agent: Peter Straus, Rogers, Coleridge & White (U.K.).

DC Simon Waterhouse and his wife, DS Charlotte (Charlie) Zailer, are spending a few days at a posh couples-only resort that makes Waterhouse uncomfortable...for good reason, it turns out. The trouble starts when a bride receives a note warning her to "Beware of the couple at the table nearest to yours." But no table is any nearer or farther from any other. A honeymooning guest is then murdered. It's an odd murder which requires an odd mind--Waterhouse's--to figure out. It actually takes six months for him to solve the crime, long after everyone else has given up. Hannah is in good form in this eleventh Waterhouse-Zailer mystery (after The Next To Die, 2019), delivering a complicated narrative carried forward by her hallmark peculiar characters. Hannah is known for intricate plots, and The Couple at the Table certainly qualifies. Some readers may find the puzzle a bit too tangled, but those who relish being confounded will enjoy tearing at their hair.
