Description

"A tale of murder and intrigue that will ensnare knitters and non-knitters alike. I couldn't put it down."—Barbara Ross, author of the Maine Clambake Mysteries

Time has not been kind to sleepy Dorset Falls, Connecticut, where an erstwhile resident is hoping to bring a tattered yarn shop back to life—but with a murderer on the loose, the whole town is in knots...

Josie Blair left Dorset Falls twelve years ago in hopes of making it big in New York City. But after earning an overpriced master's degree and getting fired by a temperamental designer, she finds herself heading back to her hometown. Her great-uncle was injured in a car accident, and newly unemployed Josie is the only person available to take care of him. Uncle Eb's wife didn't survive the crash, so Josie is also tasked with selling the contents of her Aunt Cora's yarn shop. But the needling ladies of the Charity Knitters Association pose a far bigger challenge than a shop full of scattered skeins . . .

Miss Marple Knits is one of the few businesses still open in the dreary downtown. Josie can't imagine how it stayed open for so long, yet something about the cozy, resilient little shop appeals to her. But when one of the town's most persnickety knitters turns up dead in a pile of cashmere yarn, Josie realizes there's something truly twisted lurking beneath the town's decaying façade . . .

      • bioText: Sadie Hartwell grew up near the Canadian border in northern New York State, where it's cold, dark, and snowy almost half the year—a perfect environment for nurturing a simultaneous love of mystery fiction and needlework. She attended St. Lawrence University, graduating with a degree in history, and has worked as a waitress, handbag designer/manufacturer, paralegal, and copy editor before turning to writing full time. Now she gets to play with yarn and make up stories whenever she wants, and wishes everyone had a job as much fun as hers.

At the outset of Hartwell’s promising debut, the first in her Tangled Web mystery series, Josie Blair reluctantly leaves the world of New York City fashion for her hometown of Dorset Falls, Conn., to assist her childless great-uncle Eben Lloyd, who’s recovering from the car accident that killed his wife, Cora. Uncle Eb, whom Josie barely remembers, is unpleasant; his dog, Jethro, frightens her tuxedo cat, Coco; and she’s expected to take care of the fearsome chickens at Eb’s farmhouse. Josie prefers the task of closing Cora’s yarn shop, Miss Marple Knits, located in the dying downtown, and selling its contents, but more than one shop patron want to buy the business from Eb. Josie is sure that Cora, someone she never met, wouldn’t approve. When Josie later finds one of the would-be buyers dead in a pile of cashmere yarn, she turns amateur sleuth. A section of knitting patterns rounds out this appealing crafting cozy. Agent: John Talbot, Talbot Fortune Agency.

After losing her job with a temperamental New York designer, Josie Blair comes home to Dorset Falls, CT, to care for her uncle, who was injured in a car crash that killed Aunt Cora. Dreary Dorset Falls is even worse than Josie remembers: boarded-up storefronts, no Starbucks, no mall. Only her aunt's shop, Miss Marple Knits, seems to be prospering. When one of Aunt Cora's knitting friends turns up dead, Josie reluctantly investigates. It seems someone is knocking off the members of the Dorset Falls Historic Commission. VERDICT This debut cozy's well-drawn characters and a tightly knitted plot will bring a smile to readers of Maggie Sefton, Sally Goldenbaum, and Anne Canadeo. Crafting instructions for various projects are included.
