Description

The stage is set for a fiendishly dramatic summer at theater camp for Cynthia and her boyfriend, Ryan. With no demons at all. Right?
Last fall, Cynthia Rothschild saved her best friend, as well as the entire student body, from the demon librarian, Mr. Gabriel, all while executing the most awesome set design for the school musical, Sweeney Todd. But now that all that demon stuff is behind her, Cyn is looking forward to the best summer ever at theater camp with her former-crush-and-now-boyfriend, Ryan Halsey. Once she gets to camp, though, Cyn realizes this summer might not be all she's been hoping for. First, Ryan's best camp friend is a girl (which Ryan had never mentioned to Cyn), and she just happens to be ridiculously pretty. Plus, it seems the demon stuff is not entirely over as Cyn had hoped. At least any new demons that show up to ruin her summer can't possibly be as evil as Mr. Gabriel. It's not like he could somehow come back to life to seek his terrible revenge or something. Best-selling author Michelle Knudsen brings back all the hilarity and horror (not to mention hot guys) in this sizzling sequel to Evil Librarian.

        About Me
I grew up in Staten Island, New York. Our family was small—I didn't have any brothers or sisters—but I was lucky to have some great friends who were just like family to me. (They still are!) Today I live in Brooklyn, New York, with my wonderful husband, two amazing stepdaughters, and two very silly cats.
Some of my favorite things to do are reading (especially science fiction and fantasy), taking long walks in Prospect Park, playing D&D and video games, and watching the Rangers play hockey at Madison Square Garden. I also love going to Broadway shows with my two best friends. Once upon a time I used to perform in a lot of (amateur) musical theater, mostly in high school and college and then later in community theater productions of Gilbert & Sullivan operettas. These days I don't have enough free time to go to rehearsals, so most of my singing happens at karaoke or at home with my family while my husband plays guitar. But I hope to go back to being in shows someday!
I keep trying to become a knitter but it's a slow process. I'm very good at buying yarn and starting projects—not so good at finishing them!
        About My Work
I'm the author of more than fifty books for children and young adults, including the New York Times best-selling picture book Library Lion (which Time magazine named as one of the 100 Best Children's Books of All Time!).
I love writing all kinds of things for readers of all ages. My books so far include board books, coloring and activity books, early readers, chapter books, middle-grade novels, and young adult novels. I also sometimes write short stories, including short speculative fiction for older readers. I rarely write totally realistic fiction; my favorite things to write about are those that can't happen in the regular, everyday world. I love writing about magic and dragons and monsters and adventure. My stories are also often about true friendship and loyalty and love. I try to write characters that you would want to be friends with in real life.
Three Things You Might Not Know About Me
        1. My favorite band is My Chemical Romance.
        2. When I was little I wanted to be either an animal trainer (specifically of big cats like black panthers and snow leopards) or a country singer like Dolly Parton.
        3. I'm scared of spiders, but I love snakes.

Take one part humor, add an equal part horror, and spice with teenage drama (musical and romantical) for a (slightly grim) laugh. After the events of Evil Librarian (2014), Cyn thought all would be smooth sailing. But she's still got problems: boyfriend Ryan has a very possessive best girl friend at musical-theater camp. Oh, and Cyn hasn't told him that she promised the demoness two more visits. And that's just the start. The (adorable) teen author of Cyn's show is a demon, even if he is the nice kind--and he may have accidentally led Mr. Gabriel, who isn't dead after all, right to Cyn. Campers and counselors start to disappear, Mr. Gabriel's many-legged brother is lurking around, and they still want Cyn's friend as their child bride. What's a "super-roach" (demon-resistant human) to do? Snarky and witty, filled with some steamy dreams, bloody battles, and plenty of musical-theater references, this may not be quite as fizzy as the first book--but it's still a hell of a ride. Levelheaded, confident, ambitious, highhanded Cyn may be imperfect, but she's also perfectly believable. Even the love quadrangle manages to be unexpected and not without flashes of humor. One secondary character is described as dark-skinned, which, combined with the absence of ethnic cues, points to Cyn and Ryan as being white. Campy, from the setting to the humor to the horror, and all the better for it. (Humorous horror. 13 & up)

In Evil Librarian (rev. 11/14), high-school junior Cyn and her crush Ryan saved Cyn's best friend from Mr. Gabriel (a demon masquerading as the new school librarian), put on a killer production of Sweeney Todd, and became a couple. Now Cyn just wants to enjoy the best summer ever at drama camp with Ryan. It's not quite that easy: Cyn doesn't know anyone besides Ryan; and Ryan seems to know never-before-mentioned just-a-friend Jules really well. Cyn is excited to design sets for an original musical written by fellow camper Peter, who turns out to be very cute and a demon, both factors that exacerbate growing insecurities and resentments between Cyn and Ryan. What was supposed to be a demon-free summer soon features one not-evil demon, two definitely-evil demons (including the resurrected Mr. Gabriel), cameos by a demon-wannabe human and a demoness of unclear motives, and a quick trip to the demon world to fulfill a previous bargain. Cyn spends a somewhat unnecessary chapter recapping the first book, then picks up the pace with plenty of supernatural action, funny overreactions, snarky banter, and kissing. That the good guys will win and Cyn and Ryan will work it out are never really in question, but the novel nevertheless builds to a satisfying conclusion with just enough loose ends to make readers eager for what awaits Cyn in her senior year. katie bircher
