Description
""This is the most fun I've had with a book this year. Every page is a delight and the mystery got its hooks into me from the first chapter." – Stuart Turton, bestselling author of The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle
The letter was short. A name, a time, a place.
Marion Lane and the Midnight Murder plunges readers into the heart of London, to the secret tunnels that exist far beneath the city streets. There, a mysterious group of detectives recruited for Miss Brickett's Investigations & Inquiries use their cunning and gadgets to solve crimes that have stumped Scotland Yard.
Late one night in April 1958, a filing assistant at Miss Brickett's receives a letter of warning, detailing a name, a time, and a place. She goes to investigate but finds the room empty. At the stroke of midnight, she is murdered by a killer she can't see—her death the only sign she wasn't alone. It becomes chillingly clear that the person responsible must also work for Miss Brickett's, making everyone a suspect.
Marion Lane, a first-year Inquirer-in-training, finds herself drawn ever deeper into the investigation. When her friend and colleague is framed for the crime, to clear his name she must sort through the hidden alliances at Miss Brickett's and secrets dating back to WWII. Masterful, clever and deliciously suspenseful, Marion Lane and the Midnight Murder is a fresh take on the Agatha Christie-style locked-room murder mystery, with an exciting new heroine detective.

Late one night in April 1958, a filing assistant at Miss Brickett's receives a letter of warning, detailing a name, a time, and a place. She goes to investigate but finds the room empty. • content: Part mystery, part adventure, and part science fiction, this audiobook has something for all listeners. Marion Lane serves as inquirer-in-training for Miss Brickett's Investigations & Inquiries. She travels deep into the tunnels beneath London, where she encounters dangers of all sorts--including murder. Narrator Karen Cass opens with slow, deliberate pacing that increases as the intrigue progresses. Cass's character voices define each individual, with special success achieved in her portrayal of Marion's abrasive grandmother. As the locked-room mystery reaches its climax, Cass's energetic expression makes this audiobook an enjoyable creative puzzle. V.M.G. © AudioFile 2021, Portland, Maine

This debut novel launches a new series set in 1958 London. Miss Brickett's Investigations & Inquiries employs an odd group of inquirers who use their unusual skills to solve crimes that have stumped Scotland Yard. They operate in secret tunnels that exist far beneath the city streets, believed to have been used by a group of alchemists practicing necromancy in the 1300s and later used for covert operations during WWII. A filing assistant is murdered within the underground complex and, given the agency's extraordinary security measures, it is certain that the killer must also work there. Marion Lane, a first-year inquirer-in-training, is drawn into the investigation when her friend and mentor is accused of the crime. Marion has always sensed something deviant about the tunnels: A seething, visceral darkness lurked there. Using a mysterious diagram somewhat akin to Harry Potter's Marauder's Map, she uncovers a most unusual weapon of apocalyptic proportions. Fans of Christopher Fowler's Peculiar Crimes Unit might enjoy this, as well as teens graduating from J. K. Rowling, Eoin Colfer, and Philip Pullman.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2020, American Library Association.)
