When a local pastor dies under mysterious circumstances, two women from the pastor's congregation approach Waymaker, offering to pay him to look into the pastor's death. Lazarre-White's performance is subtle, a master class in narrating a book from a single viewpoint. Lazarre-White captures Waymaker's character perfectly, embodying his wounded spirit and his resilience in the face of the constant injustices he witnesses while trying to find out why the pastor died.      This reissue of Cosby's (Razorblade Tears) debut novel, now on audio, shows an enormously talented writer coming into his craft. As a former marine and sheriff's deputy, Nathan Waymaker has led an interesting but tragic life. His parents were violently killed, and he's frustrated with his small town's corrupt and incompetent police force. Nathan is known as someone who can take the law into his own hands, but when he's asked to investigate a preacher's death and discovers a world of adult-film stars, gangsters, and megachurches, he realizes he may have taken on too much. As this is Cosby's debut, one can see his own artistic growing pains, particularly in his somewhat stereotyped depictions of women (e.g., the damsel in distress who needs the hero's help). Even so, he displays a remarkable talent for dark humor and for creating fascinating but morally questionable characters. Adam Lazarre-White's exceptional vocal talents bring these Southern gothic characters to life, capturing the grit and violence of Cosby's world. Additionally, an introduction by Cosby adds context to this book's creation. VERDICT While a bit unpolished, this is a necessary listen for diehard Cosby fans who are eager to see how the talented writer has grown.--James Gardner
