Description

An uncovered forgery sparks wrath on a remote island in Anne Zouroudi's latest spellbinding crime novel set in modern Greece.

A painter is found dead at sea off the coast of a remote Greek island. For our enigmatic detective Hermes Diaktoros, the plot can only thicken: the painter's work, an icon of the Virgin long famed for its miraculous powers, has just been uncovered as a fake. But has the painter died of natural causes or by a wrathful hand? What secret is a dishonest gypsy keeping? And what haunts the ancient catacombs beneath the bishop's house?

In the fourth of the Seven Deadly Sins mysteries, the inimitable Hermes faces forgery, betrayal, and superstition, and the consequences of all-consuming rage.

Zouroudi’s engaging fourth Deadly Sins mystery (after 2012’s The Doctor of Thessaly) takes Greek investigator Hermes Diaktoros, who belongs to no police force and whose concerns are “not with the enforcement of written laws, but with the administration of justice,” to Kalkos, where he visits the island’s miraculous icon, the Lady of Sorrows, and finds several oddities revolving around it and those responsible for its care. When Diaktoros suspects that the icon he sees in the church is not the original, his lover, art expert Kara Athanit, concurs. Add in Diaktoros’s suspicions about the death of aging fisherman and icon painter Sotiris; a theft of peaches by Pavlos, a gypsy; and a long-buried secret torturing bitter, crippled Nassia and her son, Agiris, and her daughter, Sambeca. With compassion and wisdom, Diaktoros resolves the various puzzles without invoking any laws. Diaktoros embodies a delightful combination of lusty appetites and thirst for justice.

Who better than an iconoclastic detective to solve the murder of an icon painter? A lengthy prologue set in 1863 presents a lost suitcase full of unspecified but priceless cargo aboard an unnamed ship. In the present, on the remote Greek island of Kalkos, the cruiser Aphrodite slips unassumingly into a dock, attracting the attention of charismatic Father Linos Egiotis, whose Holy Church of the Lady of Sorrows seems to be the hub of the island community. Hermes Diaktoros, the enigmatic "fat man" (The Doctor of Thessaly, 2012, etc.), is also present, to the surprise of the priest, who prides himself on knowing all the locals. Hermes charmingly gets to know the community and arranges a reunion with his lovely old friend Kara Athaniti, an art historian who makes the unwelcome discovery that an icon in Father Linos' church is actually a fake. While taking a swim, Hermes and Kara hear some of the locals' stories of chicanery concerning valuable objects, and lights appear from time to time inside the allegedly deserted Aphrodite. When an icon painter named Sotiris is murdered, it's convenient that Hermes is a crack, if unconventional, investigator and that Kara is also on hand. It almost seems as if the fat man were prescient. The church custodian and his gardener brother become key sources for the information Hermes needs to crack the case. The fourth of Zouroudi's projected Seven Deadly Sins mysteries is much like its hero: droll, expansive and leisurely.
