Description

A huge bestseller in England, France, and Australia, the third book in the Dark Iceland series from a spectacular new crime writer.

"
Easily the best yet. Beautifully written and elegantly paced with a plot that only gradually becomes visible, as if the reader had been staring into the freezing fog waiting for shapes to emerge."—The Guardian, UK (Readers' Books of the Year 2016)
"A chiller of a thriller whose style and pace are influenced by Jónasson's admiration for Agatha Christie. It's good enough to share shelf space with the works of Yrsa Sigurdardottir and Arnaldur Indridason, Iceland's crime novel royalty."—The Washington Post

Hailed for combining the darkness of Nordic Noir with classic mystery writing in the tradition of Agatha Christie, author Ragnar Jónasson's books are haunting, atmospheric, and complex. Blackout, the latest Ari Thór thriller, delivers another dark mystery that is chillingly stunning with its complexity and fluidity.
On the shores of a tranquil fjord in Northern Iceland, a man is brutally beaten to death on a bright summer's night. As the 24-hour light of the arctic summer is transformed into darkness by an ash cloud from a recent volcanic eruption, a young reporter leaves Reykajvik to investigate on her own, unaware that an innocent person's life hangs in the balance. Ari Thor Arason and his colleagues on the tiny police force in Siglufjordur struggle with an increasingly perplexing case, while their own serious personal problems push them to the limit. What secrets does the dead man harbour, and what is the young reporter hiding? As silent, unspoken horrors from the past threaten them all, and the darkness deepens, it's a race against time to find the killer before someone else dies.

Jónasson’s captivating third Ari Thór Arason whodunit to be translated into English (after 2017’s Nightblind) finds Ari Thór, a policeman in the small Icelandic town of Siglufjördur, troubled by his recent breakup with the woman he once considered the only one for him. He’s distracted from his personal woes by a murder case; someone has killed contractor Elías Freysson by smashing him in the face with a length of timber studded with a nail. The victim was known for his charitable work, but the discovery in Freysson’s rooms of a duffel bag stuffed with cash suggests that the man was involved in something underhanded. The police inquiry parallels that of a psychologist-turned-journalist, Ísrún, who hopes her digging will strengthen her professional standing. Meanwhile, Hlynur Ísaksson, a colleague of Ari Thór’s, has been receiving threatening emails that revive memories of a past shame. The relatively mundane murder solution doesn’t detract from Jónasson’s impressive ability to make human despair palpable. Agent: David Headley, DHH Literary Agency (U.K.).

        July 1, 2018
In Jnasson's second Dark Iceland novel (chronologically following Snowblind, 2017), Ari Thor Arason, a rookie police officer in the remote Icelandic town of Siglufjordur, finds himself in a sink-or-swim situation when he's assigned to lead the investigation into the murder of building contractor Elias Freysson. Ari Thor is certain that the weapon, a plank from the work-site crime scene, indicates a crime of passion. But when he finds a bag of cash in Freysson's apartment, he must first investigate Freysson's actions as a local charity's treasurer and his connection to the work site's universally reviled owner: a doctor whose drunken malpractice killed patients. As Ari Thor struggles with these leads, Isrn, a Reykjavik television reporter fueled by her own secret connection to the case, moves closer to discovering Freysson's secrets, hopefully in time to save a captive girl's life. This series' nonsequential order of release in the U.S. confuses the time line, but Jnasson's exotic tundra setting, fascinating characters, and gifted storytelling make up for it. Recommended for fans of Chris Ould's Faroes series and Camilla Lckberg's Fjallbacka thrillers.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2018, American Library Association.)
