Accountable: Making America As Good As Its Promise
(OverDrive MP3 Audiobook, OverDrive Listen)
In Accountable, New York Times bestselling author Tavis Smiley addresses two issues: Public officials and the promises they have made regarding issues of concern to the African American community; and holding individuals and communities accountable for the degree to which they have utilized various tools and strategies outlined in his previous books, The Covenant and The Covenant in Action, to effect change. In sum, this book will explore how well the covenant goals have been realized. It explores topics such as healthcare, education, the unequal justice system, and jobs, and it will do so through story—real life examples of how an issue manifests itself on the ground.
Accountable will examine the conditions of our present day and the consequences for America if we fail to effect real change within the next two decades. It will make the case for American citizens to be driven by "the cause and not the candidate," and demonstrate the need to hold our politicians and ourselves accountable—because the stakes have never been higher.

- content: PBS television personality Tavis Smiley has a more heart-to-heart interview style than many talk-show hosts, and previous books, like COVENANT WITH BLACK AMERICA, combined tough talk with hopeful optimism. In this book, Smiley looks at our country since the Obama election, focusing on such factors as media bias and political partisanship--not to mention the recent economy--and how they affect black Americans. Smiley's voice is definitely an acquired taste--a halting staccato that threatens to become distracting--although he a tempers it somewhat in this reading. But when we hear the hard-luck stories he recounts--like the story of Diamante Driver, who died of brain cancer after being denied an $80 tooth extraction because of his lack of health insurance--it's easy to forget we're living in America. Starred review from March 30, 2009
Bestselling author and television host Smiley picks up where he left off in his previous book to offer a critical look at the problems facing America and to grade the government (and society at large) on its efforts to substantively confront them. Ever the consummate professional, Smiley delivers his message of hope and promise with a commanding tone that demands his audience's attention. His candid and polished reading gives his political messages an arresting personal touch. An Atria paperback.
