Description
Cape Cod summers are supposed to remain reassuringly the same, but everything falls apart when three sisters and their families come together for their annual summer vacation—and they are carrying more secrets than suitcases.
Maggie is the oldest. She feels responsible for managing the summer house and making sure everything is as it always has been. But she's hurt that her parents' recent divorce has destroyed the family's comfortable summer routines, and her own kids seem to be growing up at high speed. Is it too late to have another baby?

Jess is the middle sister. She loves her job but isn't as passionate about her marriage. She's not sure she can find the courage to tell Maggie what she's done—much less talk to her husband about it.

Virgie is the youngest, her dad's favorite. She's always been the career girl, but now there's a man in her life. Her television job on the west coast is beyond stressful, and it's taking its toll on her—emotionally and physically. She's counting on this vacation to erase the symptoms she's not talking about.

The Herington girls are together again, with their husbands and kids, for another summer in the family's old Cape Cod house. When their mother, Gloria, announces she's coming for an unscheduled visit—with her new boyfriend—no one is more surprised than their father, Arthur, who has not quite gotten over his divorce. Still, everyone manages to navigate the challenges of living grown-up lives in close quarters, until an accident reveals a new secret that brings everyone together in heartbreak...and then healing.

Poignant, compelling, and so real that you could shake the sand out of the pages, The Summer of Good Intentions is by a rising star who aims her fiction square at the heart of readers who love Elin Hilderbrand, Dorothea Benton Frank, and Mary Kay Andrews.

A traditional family trip is fraught with complications in Francis' (Three Good Things, 2013) second novel. Each summer, the Herington family comes together at their Cape Cod home to gather more memories to add to their old notebook, "The Book of Summer." This July, however, the situation is a bit more complicated. Each sister-Maggie, Jess, and Virgie-has been fumbling through her own hectic life, and their parents, Arthur and Gloria, are recently divorced. Eldest sister Maggie is struggling to maintain order and serenity in the house and feels pulled in countless directions to keep up with the needs of her family. Her twin, Jess, is dissatisfied in her marriage, feeling like she no longer connects with her husband, Tim. Things have gotten so bad between them that she's slipped into an emotional affair with a neighbor. Virgie, the baby of the family, is feeling frustrated with her high-stress job as a television news anchor in Seattle and is aggravated when she's passed over for a major story. Arthur, their father, is exhibiting signs of memory loss and has begun to demonstrate a series of bizarre habits since his marriage ended. A mystery writer, he often feels lost as to how to proceed with his latest project and longs for his wife, Gloria, to come back to him. Through some scheduling mishaps, both Arthur and his ex-wife will be vacationing with the girls and their families this summer-along with Gloria's new boyfriend, Gio. The novel alternates among the perspectives of Maggie, Jess, Virgie, and Arthur as they cope with marital woes, questions of parenthood and career, and Arthur's declining health and spirits, all while trying to keep their children happy at the beach. Despite the focus being spread over so many characters, Francis has done them justice. A compassionate and warm family drama filled to the brim with characters who feel like old friends.

        June 1, 2015
July is the hallowed time of rest and relaxation at a Cape Cod beach house for the extended Herington family. But this summer, things are off-kilter, in the view of Type A organizer Maggie, eldest of the three Herington girls. Matriarch Gloria, who divorced Arthur a year and a half earlier after 46 years of marriage, shows up with a younger male companion. Maggie's twin, Jess (some three minutes younger than Maggie), confesses to having had a relationship that threatens her marriage. Virgie, the youngest sister, displays worrisome physical symptoms, and Arthur's memory lapses and hoarding are becoming obvious to his daughters for the first time. Then tragedy strikes, numbing them all but leading to reconciliation and healing. What at first seems a standard litany of family crises gains depth in the hands of Francis, who debuted with Three Good Things (2013). With characterizations that avoid the stereotypical and a plot that ties up loose ends neatly, this is a nicely structured tearjerker that makes an ideal summer read.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
