"San Francisco is such a modern, progressive city that it is easy to forget just what a rich history it has. The eighth title in Museyon's Chronicles series, Chronicles of Old San Francisco explores the City by the Bay. Beautifully illustrated, the guide concludes with eight walking tours, from Chinatown and Nob Hill to Golden Gate Park and Haight-Ashbury."

Packing a lot of information into 320 pages, this title does not know what it wants to be when it grows up. Does it wish to be a history book, a bibliography, or a walking tour guide? As there is no introduction, conclusion, or explanation from Chandler (Film Editing), readers must decide for themselves. Arranged chronologically (from 1775 to present), the book's first section and each of the 28 chapters discusses that decade via colorful historical figures, from Emperor Norton to Joseph Strauss to Harvey Milk. While the volume is filled with intriguing people and over 500 photographs and illustrations, the reader is left wanting more. Also the author's opinions and unusual jargon come through a bit too much and this may put off a general reading audience. The second section, consisting of eight walking tour guides, is somewhat basic and there are not a lot of suggestions on where to eat, shop, or rest, and they do not include information for the elderly, those traveling with children, or those with handicap or mobility issues. VERDICT You may have left your heart in San Francisco, but you should also leave this book at home.--Melissa Aho, Univ. of Minnesota Bio-Medical Lib., Minneapolis
