Gr 7-10- Doon, which owes its name and draws many of its influences from the musical Brigadoon, begins with Veronica, who is spending the summer in Scotland with her best friend, Mackenna. In the attic of Mackenna's late Aunt Gracie's house, they uncover a wealth of secrets, including an enigmatic set of rings and Gracie's journal. The cryptic book describes the land of Doon, a place straight out of a fairy tale-complete with lush green hills and handsome princes. Soon the girls are accidentally transported to the magical realm where they met a dreamy pair of princes and do battle with an ancient evil witch determined to rule the land. The descriptions of Scotland and Doon are rich and vibrant, transporting readers alongside Veronica and Mackenna. Unfortunately, the characters aren't as fully fleshed out. Both girls are continuously self-deprecating, which some readers may find grating, while their male suitors are one-dimensional. Despite some too-convenient plot elements, those looking for a bit of escapism will still find this book to be an enjoyable read.-Kimberly Castle-Alberts, Hudson Library & Historical Society, OH
