His typical coolness has morphed into protectiveness, however, as a series of attacks makes it clear that someone wants Beth dead. A formidable hunter herself, Beth chafes at his vigilance, and their emotional tension grows when she realizes they are fated life mates and he hasn't claimed her, which she interprets to mean the former Scottish laird doesn't think she's good enough for him. Before her turning, Beth had been sold into prostitution and had been brutalized by men for most of her human life. Sands revisits her popular Argeneau series (Immortal Unchained, 2017, etc.) with another suspenseful paranormal romance with an interesting historical twist, an explosive plot, and a lively cast of secondary characters. Beth's horrific past plays into Scotty's prejudices due to his own problematic history, and readers will root for Beth's demand to be loved for who she is or not at all.
