Description

From acclaimed short-fiction star Suzanne Palmer comes an action-packed sci-fi caper that launches a high-stakes space adventure trilogy.

Fergus Ferguson, repo-man, has one job: find the spacecraft Venetia's Sword and steal it back from Arum Gilger, ex-nobleman turned power-hungry trade boss. Finding Gilger in the farthest corner of human-inhabited space, a gas-giant harvesting colony called Cernee, was easy. The hard part will be getting past a field of space mines, hacking into the Sword's compromised AI, and fighting a crew of hostile enemies to take control of the ship.

But when a cable car explosion launches Cernee into a civil war, Fergus finds himself caught in the crosshairs. Repossessing the Sword requires him to side with Gilger's enemies, risk death, and get abducted by aliens. Fergus must learn to set aside his pride—and confront a past he's been running from his whole life—in order to take back the Sword and simultaneously save Cernee from destruction.

Fergus Ferguson, a professional repo man in a spacefaring future, chases a stolen spaceship to a backwater colony, incidentally becomes the catalyst for a civil war, and draws the attention of dangerous alien neighbors in Palmer’s riotous sci-fi debut. A chance meeting with an old woman in a cable car puts Fergus at odds with Gilger, the man whose ship he’s pursuing, but also allows him the opportunity to make helpful contacts in a family of lichen farmers and the arms dealer they share a habitat with. Humor deployed in the service of the plot, good dialogue, and evocative descriptions make up for a slight lack of depth in the characters as Fergus’s newfound allies evolve into friends and he gets an unexpected opportunity to save the colony and complete his mission. Palmer makes short-distance space travel feel as comfortable as riding a bicycle, and concludes this entertaining caper with a clever resolution and a hint of intrigue. Fans of space adventure will find this a fine example of the form. Agent: Joshua Bilmes, JABberwocky Literary.

      • content: In a soft, confident voice Karen Novack narrates most of this deep-space adventure. The story features Fergus Ferguson, who is portrayed by John Kielty with a thick Scottish brogue, a touch of humor, and the steady nerves of a repo man. Fergus must find and repossess the AI-endowed spaceship VENETIA'S SWORD, which has been stolen by the ruthless trade boss Arum Gilger, voiced by Andrew James Spooner. Aided by a fearless teenager named Mari, portrayed by Khaya Fraites, and Mars-born businessman Harcourt, who is given a lyrical voice by DeJeanette Horne, Fergus must capture the ship, survive against uneven odds, and take on a few aliens. Sound effects of knife fights and exploding ships, along with intense music, light up this action-packed tale. M.B.K. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine
