Description

The stars predict a wedding-day disaster, but San Francisco astrologer Julia Bonatti never expected murder.

Julia Bonatti is alarmed by the astrological signs looming over Geneva Leary's wedding day, but nobody asked Julia's opinion and being a bridesmaid means supporting the bride no matter what. Even with the foreboding Moon-Mars-Pluto lineup in the heavens, no one's prepared for the catastrophes that strike: a no-show sister, a passed-out wedding planner, and a lethal shooting in the dead of night.

With anger and grief threatening to tear the Leary family apart, Julia is determined to understand how such a terrible tragedy could have occurred. As she digs deeper into the family's secrets, her astrological insights lead her to some rather unexpected conclusions.

An astrologer looks to the stars to help her solve the shocking shooting of a friend's sister. The Moon-Mars-Pluto connection Julia Bonatti sees in the sky on her friend Geneva Leary's wedding day seems ominous enough, but the day turns out to be even worse. First, Geneva's rebellious sister, Moira, delays the ceremony by mysteriously disappearing from the Sonoma County site moments before things are supposed to start. When Moira is located, she seems to be drunk and disoriented, and she's not the only one in that state once the reception starts: wedding planner and type A organizer Sally Stark also appears to have used the time to cut loose and drink too much. The wedding guests, however, realize that Sally's not drunk but in need of some sort of medical help, and she's quickly rushed to the hospital. When the night winds down, Julia wishes she could return home, but after all the drama, she's talked into staying over with a group of guests including Moira. In a commotion in the middle of the night, Moira is shot and killed, shocking the other guests and sending Julia into investigative mode. After all, Julia's had some success looking to the stars to help her solve crimes (The Madness of Mercury, 2016), and perhaps her unique set of skills will help identify the motive that could drive someone to kill a woman barely making it on her own. It would be great to report that di Marco hits her stride in this sophomore installment. But her failure to connect her plot more closely to her astrological premise leaves her story disappointingly flat.

The latest in di Marco's Zodiac series finds astrologer Julia Bonatti anxious at the wedding of her college friend Geneva when one of the bride's sisters, Moira, goes missing. She turns up drunk, but this wedding disaster is just gaining speed. Next up: the wedding planner passes out and dies days later. Julia spends the night at Geneva's mother's house and is awakened by gun shots. Moira is found shot dead, with a family member claiming he shot her, thinking it was a burglar. Geneva asks Julia to help find out what Moira was into. Taking clues from astrological charts, what she finds at Moira's apartment, and conversations with friends and family, Julia remains stymied; matters are complicated further when e-mails are discovered suggesting that Moira and another of the bride's sisters, Brooke, were plotting to murder Brooke's husband. Di Marco crafts an intricate, twisting plot and layers on the astrological details that fans of psychic mysteries so enjoy.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)
