Description

This final book in the New York Times-bestselling Fairyland series finds September accidentally crowned the Queen of Fairyland. But there are others who believe they have a fair and good claim on the throne, so there is a Royal Race—whoever wins will seize the crown.
Along the way, beloved characters including the Wyverary, A-Through-L, the boy Saturday, the changelings Hawthorn and Tamburlaine, the wombat Blunderbuss, and the gramophone Scratch are caught up in the madness. And September's parents have crossed the universe to find their daughter.
Who will win? What will become of September, Saturday, and A-Through-L? The answers will surprise you, and are as bewitching and bedazzling as fans of this series by Catherynne M. Valente have come to expect.

        July 1, 2016
Now seventeen, human girl September (The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making, rev. 5/11, and sequels) finds herself the reluctant new ruler of Fairyland. To complicate matters, she's obliged to compete in the dangerous Cantankerous Derby against all of Fairyland's previous monarchs, dead or alive. This is an excellent excuse for the author to revisit familiar characters and settings from the previous books while introducing new, equally bizarre and beautiful ones. September's story has increased in poignancy over the course of the series, and this volume has its fair share. September confronts the Marquess and Halloween -- her antagonists/shadow doubles -- and considers her own nature. She again meets her own Death. Most painful of all, as the result of a venomous bite, September's best friend and love interest Saturday begins to forget her. Things do turn out happily (and with a bit of a twist), as September and her friends triumph through loyalty, determination, and quick wits. Is this Valente's final visit to Fairyland? Maybe, maybe not: "Endings are rubbish," the narrator says. "There is only the place where you choose to stop talking." But if so, this is a satisfying place to stop, with many loose ends tied up neatly and loved ones reunited. Regardless, promises the narrator, "I will always be here, in my old chair by the door, waiting for you, whenever you are lonesome." katie bircher
