Needing money for his sisters' dowries, Hugh marries Eliza. Crick brings out Eliza's sweetness and the coolness that Hugh's oldest sister shows to her. Realizing that Eliza had nothing to do with her father's schemes, Hugh starts to fall in love with her but fears she'll discover his duplicity during their relationship.
