Nurse Briar Davis reluctantly agrees to volunteer at Devil's Rock Penitentiary, little expecting she will have an immediate physical attraction to inmate Knox Callaghan. Fox punches into Briar's well-constructed defenses with Knox's intense dialogue, which digs under her skin. Listeners won't be immune to the hair-raising prison fight that exposes Briar to the violence she's always feared. Fox doesn't portray Briar and other females with the same expertise that he does the male inmates, but that's easily overlooked in view of the visceral connection he establishes between Knox and Briar.      In Jordon's serviceable and steamy contemporary romance, a nurse and a convicted killer make an unlikely connection thanks to a series of convenient coincidences. Nurse Briar Davis volunteers to accompany her boss, Dr. Walker, on rounds at Devil's Rock Penitentiary. Then, as if fate feels compelled to fulfill Briar's sister's warning about the dangers a single woman might face among felons, prisoners take over the prison's Health Services Unit. She and Walker are in mortal danger. Knox Callaghan—who maintains that he's no murderer, despite the charge that landed him in Devil's Rock—steps in, saves the day, and earns himself an early parole. After Knox's release, he just happens to meet Briar at a store near her apartment and she invites him up to share a carton of ice cream. The rest goes as expected.      Briar Davis doesn't care what her sister, Laurel, says; she isn't crazy. If Briar's boss, Dr. Walker, is willing to volunteer his time at the Devil's Rock Penitentiary, the least Briar can do is accompany him as his nurse. After all, it isn't like the convicts are running loose. Briar and Dr. Walker will be locked away in the prison's infirmary, surrounded by guards, and protected by every safety precaution available. However, when Knox Callaghan is escorted into the infirmary to be treated after a fight, Briar begins to think all of the safety measures in the world might not be enough to keep her from falling for him.
