Description

Amanda Baron died in a boating accident on the Ohio River in 1953. Or, did she? While it was generally accepted that she had died when a coal barge rammed the pleasure boat she was sharing with her lover, her body was never found.

Travis Baron was an infant when his mother disappeared. After the accident and the subsequent publicity, Travis's father scoured the house of all evidence that Amanda Baron had ever lived, and her name was never to be uttered around him. Now in high school, Travis yearns to know more about his mother. With the help of his best friend, Mitch Malone, Travis begins a search for the truth about the mother he never knew. The two boys find an unlikely ally: an alcoholic former detective who served time for falsifying evidence. Although his reputation is in tatters, the information the detective provides about the death of Amanda Baron is indisputable--and dangerous.

Nearly two decades after her death, Travis and Mitch piece together a puzzle lost to the dark waters of the Ohio River. They know how Amanda Baron died, and why. Now what do they do with the information?

In this engrossing coming-of-age mystery set in the postindustrial town of Brilliant, Ohio, from Yocum (Favorite Sons), journalist Mitch Malone agrees to help his best friend, Travis Baron, find out about Travis’s mother. Amanda Baron and a lover apparently died in a boating accident on the Ohio River in 1953 when Travis was a baby, but no bodies were ever found. Travis, who grew up in the same house as his often-absent, widely feared father, Big Frank, knows nothing of his mother, not even what she looked like. Mitch and Travis’s quest for answers involves visiting a graveyard at midnight, sorting through old newspaper clippings on microfilm, scouring police reports, and rooting around Big Frank’s attic. Most enlightening is their interview with a former detective, who believes Amanda was murdered, possibly by Big Frank. Vivid local color and a satisfying portrait of boyhood friendship more than compensate for a confusing beginning and some head-scratching plot twists. Agent: Colleen Mohyde, Doe Coover Agency.

        February 15, 2016
An accident on the Ohio River has far-reaching consequences for a boy and his best friend. Mitch Malone and Travis Baron have grown up together in the river village of Brilliant, Ohio. In the late 1960s and early '70s, the steel industry is still thriving, and so are the bars on Brilliant's brief main street. When Mitch and Travis aren't on the athletic field or exploring Tarr's Dome, they amuse themselves along the banks of the Ohio River by shooting carp with bow and arrow and selling them to Turkeyman Melman, an eccentric scavenger. But Travis has a more compelling purpose in his life; he wants to know what really happened to his mother, Amanda. When he was just a baby, she and a mystery man supposedly drowned in a boating accident on the Ohio. But Travis doesn't dare ask his father for the truth. Big Frank is a vicious drunk with a string of failed subsequent marriages and a callous indifference that frequently erupts into violence against his only child. Whatever research Travis does on Operation Amanda is a stealth mission that depends on Mitch's uneasy help. Travis' discovery of a memorial garden for his mother and a secret visitor who brings flowers and leaves large footprints fuels the boy's determination to get to the truth about the night his mother and a rumored lover were on Frank's pleasure boat, which crashed into a barge. Travis and Mitch interview a disgraced detective who had pursued the accident as a homicide and lends them his notes. But Travis is desperate to believe that somehow Amanda escaped--an obsession that comes to a head the night after his high school graduation. Yocum (The Essay, 2012, etc.) creates so much sympathy for his characters in this coming-of-age tale that you hope for an alternate theory to what appears to be the ineluctable facts of a tragedy.
