Description

"Both heartbreaking and life-affirming" (Edith Eger, author of The Choice), the long-awaited memoir of Holocaust survivor Hannah Pick-Goslar, who shares an intimate look into her life and friendship with Anne Frank.
In 1933, Hannah Pick-Goslar and her family fled Nazi Germany to live in Amsterdam, where she struck up a close friendship with her next-door neighbor, an outspoken and fun-loving young girl named Anne Frank. For several years, the inseparable pair enjoyed a carefree childhood of games, sleepovers, and treats with the other children in their neighborhood of Rivierenbuurt. But in 1942, Hannah and Anne's lives abruptly changed forever. As the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam progressed, Anne and the Frank family seemingly vanished, leaving behind unmade beds and dishes in the sink—but no trace of Anne's precious diary. Torn from her dear friend without warning, Hannah spent the next two years tormented by questions about Anne's fate, wondering if she had, by some miracle, managed to escape danger.

In this long‑awaited memoir, Hannah shares the story of her childhood during the Holocaust, from the introduction of anti-Jewish laws in Amsterdam to the gradual disappearance of classmates and, eventually, the Frank family, to Hannah and her family's imprisonment in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. As Hannah chronicles the experiences of her own life during and after the war, she provides a searing look at what countless children endured at the hands of the Nazi regime, as well as an intimate, never‑before‑seen portrait of the most recognizable victim of the Holocaust. Culminating in an astonishing fateful reunion, My Friend Anne Frank is the profoundly moving story of childhood and friendship during one of the darkest periods in the world's history.

Award-winning Vanderbilt historian Blackbourn rethinks Germany in the World, arguing that it was a persuasive force even before unification in the 19th century. Joint Chief Curator of Historic Royal Palaces and a prolific historian, Borman (Crown & Sceptre) limns the historic significance ofAnne Boleyn & Elizabeth I. In Revolutionary Spring, Wolfson Prize--winning Clark refreshes our view of the revolutions that rocked Europe in 1848. In Homelands, Oxford historian Garton Ash draws on both scholarship and personal experience to portray Europe post-World War II. In Soldiers Don't Go Mad, distinguished journalist Glass uses the friendship and literary output of outstanding war poets Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen--both gay and both ultimately opposed to fighting--to show how an understanding of post-traumatic stress disorder and its treatment first emerged during the industrialized slaughter of World War I. Journalist Hartman's Battle of Ink and Ice shows that the contention between explorers Robert Peary and Frederick Cook, both claiming to have discovered the North Pole, also sparked a newspaper war with all the earmarks of fake news. The long-anticipated My Friend Anne Frank recounts Holocaust survivor Pick-Goslar's friendship with Frank (she's called Lies Goosens in The Diary of a Young Girl), having been together with her at the Westerbork transit camp and eventually Bergen-Belsen. Also known as the Graveyard of the Pacific, the Columbia River Bar forms where the river pours into the ocean off Oregon's coast and creates fearsome currents that have claimed numerous lives; like his abusive father, Sullivan risked crossing it, and he makes his book at once history, memoir, and meditation on male behavior at its extreme. Former undersecretary of defense for intelligence in the Obama administration, Vickers recalls a life in intelligence and special operations that arcs from his Green Beret days to his involvement in the CIA's secret war against the Soviets in Afghanistan to the war on terror. In Road to Surrender, the New York Times best-selling Thomas (First: Sandra Day O'Connor) relies on fresh material to convey the decision to drop the atomic bomb from the perspectives of Secretary of War Henry Stimson, Japanese Foreign Minister Shigenori Togo, and Gen. Carl "Tooey" Spaatz, head of strategic bombing in the Pacific. In National Dish, three-time James Beard award-winning food journalist von Bremzen investigates the relationship between food and place by examining the history of six major food cultures--France, Italy, Japan, Spain, Mexico, and Turkey. In Beyond the Shores, the Harriet Tubman Prize--winning Walker (Exquisite Slaves) considers why Black Americans leave the United States and what they encounter when they do, moving from early 1900s performer Florence Mills to 1930s scientists to the author's own grandfather. An historian at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, Walton assays the century-long intelligence war between the West and the Soviet Union/Russia, considering lessons that can be gleaned today in Spies.

Firsthand account of a Holocaust survivor who knew Anne Frank. Born into a prosperous, middle-class German Jewish family like the Franks, Pick-Goslar fled to Amsterdam after the Nazis came to power in 1933. Born in 1928, the author was the same age as Anne, and since the families lived in adjacent buildings, they quickly became friends and classmates. In the early chapters, Pick-Goslar recounts the carefree activities of two schoolgirls, but the text is imbued with an increasingly ominous background, capped by the brutal German invasion in May 1940. In July 1942, the Franks disappeared, leaving a message that they had moved to Switzerland. In fact, they had gone into hiding in Otto Frank's warehouse, where they remained until they were betrayed in August 1944. Pick-Goslar's family was arrested in June 1943, and they spent six months in a filthy Dutch transit camp before being sent to Bergen-Belsen in Germany. Although not an extermination camp, the conditions were so awful that most prisoners died of starvation or disease after months of suffering. That included the author's entire extended family except a baby sister under her care. During this time, she encountered Anne, already starving and ill, in a neighboring camp. Liberated in 1945, Pick-Goslar moved to Palestine in 1947, became a nurse, and died in 2022 at the age of 93. Co-author Kraft, a journalist based in Tel Aviv, renders a compelling yet disturbing story. Readers will squirm at the Nazis' loathsome behavior and feel disheartened to learn that all advanced Western governments (the U.S. included) denounced Nazi atrocities but turned away Jews fleeing Germany except for those who were wealthy and famous. Holland was no exception, classifying Pick-Goslar's family as "temporary refugees," with the understanding that they would move on. Painful history but a good choice for readers interested in Anne Frank or Holocaust-era memoirs.

Vivacious Anne Frank became shy Pick-Goslar's "very first friend" after their families fled anti-Semitic violence in Berlin and settled in Amsterdam. Pick-Goslar shares vivid memories of her adventures with Anne and their close-knit refugee community, up to the shocking day she entered the Franks' empty apartment and was told that the Franks escaped to Switzerland, a necessary lie. After her mother's death, Pick-Goslar and her remaining family ended up in Bergen-Belsen, and she became responsible for her much younger sister. Pick-Goslar recounts with arresting intimacy the countless horrors she endured, including her devastating final encounters with her dear friend. When Anne Frank's earthshaking diary was published, Anne's father asked Pick-Goslar, who, despite all but overwhelming odds, established a happy life in Israel, to tell her story publicly. She did so for decades, traveling the world. In her final months in 2022, Pick-Goslar worked with journalist Dina Kraft to create this clarifying and resounding memoir. Pair this with the similarly revelatory The Last Secret of the Secret Annex (2023), by Joop van Wijk-Voskuijl and Jeroen De Bruyn. There is always more to tell about the Holocaust.
