Description
February, 1212.
Sir Josse d'Acquin and Helewise are summoned to Southfire Hall, where Josse's elderly uncle, Hugh, lies dying, surrounded by his children. But the pair soon discovers that Hugh's ill health is not the only cause of distress in the house: for Hugh's son and heir, Herbert, has taken an unpleasant new wife, the widowed Lady Cyrille.
Josse and Helewise are distracted by the discovery of an injured young man on the road outside on the evening of their arrival, but the longer they remain in the house, the more they feel that something is very wrong. What happened to Josse's cousin Aeleis, who no one speaks of? Where is Lady Cyrille's small son? And why do they both feel as if the house itself is alive – and threatened by approaching evil?|February, 1212. Fans of Clare’s Hawkenlye series will enjoy the interactions between Sir Josse d’Acquin and his wife, Lady Helewise, in their solid 16th outing (after 2013’s The Winter King). In February 1212, Josse and Helewise travel to his ancestral home in Sussex, Southfire Hall, to pay their respects to Josse’s elderly uncle, Hugh, who’s dying. The pair find the atmosphere at the hall uneasy. Helewise is discomfited by an encounter with a six-year-old boy, Olivar, who lives in mortal fear of a scaly monster under his bed. To Olivar’s dismay, his unsympathetic mother, Cyrille, punishes him severely for having introduced himself to the visitors. That Hugh’s heir, Herbert, who has married Cyrille, intends to adopt Olivar as his ward causes more tension. The arrival of Peter Southey, a stranger seriously injured in a fall from a horse, further darkens the mood and sets the stage for several killings. After a slow start, the action builds to a clever payoff.

A visit to a treasured childhood home involves Sir Josse d'Acquin and his wife, Helewise, in yet another murder. In February 1212, Josse and Helewise (The Winter King, 2014, etc.) have undertaken a frigid journey to visit his elderly Uncle Hugh, his mother's brother. Josse spent many happy periods at Southfire Hall as a youth enjoying the company of his cousins, especially the daring Aeleis. Although they are warmly welcomed, the pair soon notice that the family is very tense indeed. The trouble seems to be caused by Cyrille de Picus, the wife of Herbert, Josse's oldest cousin Isabelle's son. Cyrille is cold, bossy, and cruel to Olivar, her son from a former marriage, whom Herbert, lacking any male offspring, means to adopt as his heir. The arrival of a young man injured nearby in a riding accident creates a mystery when Josse discovers that the man, who calls himself Peter Southey, has in his possession a carved chess figure that Josse is certain belongs to Aeleis, who ran off after refusing to marry an older man Hugh had chosen for her. He remembers well that Aeleis found the figure while she and Josse were investigating the undercroft of Southfire Hall, parts of which date back to Roman times. Peter seems to be improving, so when he suddenly dies, Josse and Helewise grow suspicious. The atmosphere in the house is increasingly uncomfortable. Olivar continues to have terrifying nightmares; Cyrille becomes even more unpleasant. Uncle Hugh may hold the answer to some of Josse's questions, but his drifting in and out of lucidity leaves Josse and Helewise to solve the riddle on their own. Of all Clare's charmingly mystical looks at life and death in 13th-century England, this one-sitting read is by far the purest mystery.

It's no wonder Clare's novels are popularthey're magical, atmospheric, and beautifully plotted, and always provide a glimpse of life in thirteenth-century Britain. In the latest installment of the Hawkenlye Abbey series, Josse d'Acquin and his lady Helewise visit Southfire Hall, where Josse's extended family lives. Josse hasn't seen this branch of his family for nearly 20 years, but he has fond memories of visits to Southfire when he was young. However, when he and Helewise arrive, they find that the house seems filled with a palpable sense of evil. Hugh's son has married Cyrille de Picus, an extremely unpleasant woman who rules the household with an iron fist. Josse's cousin Aeleis has vanished, and the rest of the family seems completely cowed by the vile Cyrille. But when a young man who's been seriously injured in a fall from his horse is discovered outside Southfire's gates, the mystery deepens, and Josse realizes it's up to him to determine who has the most to gain from destroying his family. Thoroughly entertaining fare for historical-mystery devotees.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
