Description
A stranger's arrival in a small Southern town stirs up old secrets in this "aching, absorbing, yet uplifting read" from the author of The Memory House (Booklist).
Renowned yet private, thriller writer Hayden Winters lives a life colored by lies. As he is deeply ashamed of his past, his hunger for an honest relationship and dreams of starting a family remain unsatisfied, and he can trust no one with his secrets. He's determined to outrun his personal demons, but the charming old Peach Orchard Inn and a woman whose presence is as gentle as a sparrow's song stops him in his tracks.
Carrie Riley is afraid of everything from flying to thunderstorms, and pretty much of life itself. But meeting the enigmatic writer staying at the inn emboldens her to learn everything about him. When they discover a vulnerable boy hiding at the inn, Hayden is compelled to help Carrie protect him. Soon they're led to a centuries-old mystery that haunts Hayden's sleep, and his only safe haven is Carrie. As the secrets of the past and present cause their lives to become entwined, all that's left to come to light is love—if the grim truth doesn't tear them apart first.
"A beautiful tale . . . If you love a bit of mystery, small town stories and having a little hope you will enjoy The Rain Sparrow on a rainy day." —Fresh Fiction

Reticent thriller writer Hayden Winters is not looking for involvement with the local populace when he lands in tiny Honey Ridge, TN. But a late-night chance hotel kitchen encounter with librarian Carrie Riley and a drenching thunderstorm that brings a shivering 11-year-old to the door draw Hayden in, caught by the boy's desperation and the woman's caring touch. VERDICT Tender, haunting, and soul-satisfying, this story of hope, redemption, and justice skillfully blends romances in two separate time periods with a touch of the paranormal. Fans of sweet romance, women's fiction, and gentle mysteries will be spellbound. Goodnight (The Memory House) lives in Oklahoma.

Starred review from February 15, 2016
Commissioned to write the newest lucrative thriller, famous author Hayden Winters retreats to Honey Ridge's Peach Orchard Inn, in Tennessee, where his chance meeting with insecure but caring librarian Carrie Riley and young local boy Brody sets him on a path of self-discovery. While at the inn, he is continually visited by dreams of a Honey Ridge love story from 1867, one that he eventually realizes is based on real-life people. The dreams, along with being back in the South, unearth secrets from his dark past. Is he losing his mind, or is the old inn alive with spirits seeking him out to share their story and make peace with his own? Goodnight's prose is elegant, particularly in how she crafts Hayden's fascinating inner monologue. The parallel historical and present-day stories are told in seamlessly interconnected, alternating chapters. The insecurities of childhood manifesting in adulthood are relatable, and the heartbreak and redemptive healing that are given center stage in the story expose the painful realities of abusive homes. The second of Goodnight's Honey Ridge novels (The Memory House, 2015) is an aching, absorbing, yet uplifting read.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2016, American Library Association.)
