        Gr 9 Up-The ability to start fires with her mind makes Ava a rarity in the magical world. After her mother's murder, she is forced to become an assassin for the supernatural mafia, the Coterie, led by the ruthless vampire Venus. Ava is joined on the job by her close friends and teammates: Lock, a half human/half dryad, and Ezra, a handsome werefox. When Venus wants Ava to kill Duncan, who is like a grandfather to Ava's guardian Cade, she refuses. Knowing there will be repercussions, Ava and her friends go on the run, but Venus has leverage, and Ava's options are limited. Ali Ahn skillfully narrates this appealing supernatural story. Her youthful voice has just the right amount of edge for Ava's character, and she effectively differentiates among the eclectic cast of supporting characters. Her pacing is strong and the dialogue, narrative, and action scenes will fully engage listeners.
