(OverDrive MP3 Audiobook, OverDrive Listen)
Political intrigue, culture clash and romance make a stirring mix in this award-winning follow-up novel to the acclaimed Shards of Honor.
In the wake of interplanetary war, former commander Cordelia Naismith has deserted her own planet to marry the leader of the defeated enemy, Aral Vorkosigan. On his home planet of Barrayar, two rival factions are eyeing the recently vacated throne, and Aral, recently appointed regent of Barrayar by the emperor on his deathbed, must stand between them. As Lord and Lady Vorkosigan, Aral and Cordelia struggle to establish stability in a fragile government thrown into confusion by the transition of power and the threat of civil war. When a palace coup endangers the government, their lives, and her unborn son, Cordelia takes action to secure the safety of her new family and new home.

- content: Author Bujold once again demonstrates her writing prowess in the science fiction genre with a tale of civil war in a distant world. The story has multiple layers and offers plenty of outspoken opinions about the current state of our own planet. Narrator Grover Gardner offers a hearty reading that leaves listeners feeling satisfied but never stuffed. Gardner knows just how far to go while navigating the well-worn genre and never stoops to vain attempts to impress his audience. Ultimately, many sci-fi fans have heard it all, and this recording will bring them back down to earth with its simplicity. L.B. (c) AudioFile 2010, Portland, Maine

- content: Carol Cowan and Michael Hanson contribute a stellar performance in the continuing saga of the Vorkosigan family in this sequel to Shards of Honor. The different voices enhance Bujold's compelling tale of politics, palace coups and a daring rescue on the recently feudal planet Barrayar. Cowan's change in cadence gives Dru's personality added dimension; Hanson's sonorous tones define Bothari; and his lighter, more hesitant tones accurately depict Koudelka. His rendition of Count Piotr's querulousness is well conveyed in a crotchety voice. The only thing that keeps Barrayar from being a candidate for an Earphones Award is the whiny falsetto voices used for Miles and Gregor in their minuscule appearances as children. Perhaps a third narrator should be added when a child's voice is needed. D.T.H. Winner of AUDIOFILE Earphones Award (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine
