Mercy Rule
(Adobe EPUB eBook, Kindle Book, OverDrive Read)
Brady just wants to get out. Go to college, play football, maybe reach the NFL. He definitely wants to stop waiting for his deadbeat mother to come home, sleeping on park benches, and going to bed hungry. But first he has to lead the team to the championships. It all adds up to a lot of stress. So who can really blame him when he and the football team turn their aggressions on the new freak? Even the quarterback needs to blow off steam sometimes.
Coach turns a blind eye to his players' crimes—because this year, they're going to State. But maybe if Coach had paid more attention they could've caught it before it all happened. Maybe it could've been avoided.
Maybe.
With quick cuts between a large cast of unforgettable characters, and razor-sharp plotting, Tom Leveen takes readers on a countdown to an inevitable, horrifying act. This gripping novel offers an intense, smart perspective on the tragic, toxic mindsets behind the celebrated American sport and the monsters it creates.

- Danny's parents yanked him from the art school that let him wear a kilt and listen to bands that no one's heard of. Now he's starting sophomore year at the public high school—the one with the gymnasium at the heart of the building and the glorified athletes who rule it all. The smart thing would be to blend in, but Danny has always been about making statements.

The lives of a dozen diverse high school students and a teacher are examined in the months leading up to a Halloween school shooting. Following setup pages in the frontmatter that reproduce an ominous exchange of text messages, seven narrators lead readers through the chaotic world of high school. Sophomore Danny is a loner, expelled from his arts-based high school and starting over at a new school. Seniors Brady and Donte are football players with hard lives coupled with the drive to win in the game and in life. Freshman Cadence is an upbeat realist trying to make friends at her new school. Senior Vivi is new to both the school and her upper-middle-class lifestyle. Freshman Drea is looking for friends and the strength to stop cutting herself. And Coach, the father figure to Brady and Donte, wants his football team to win and his players to become upstanding men. Leveen captures the Sturm und Drang of high school, but the overall story suffers; with seven narrators, some stories--such as Drea's and Vivi's--feel like afterthoughts. A critical revelation in the final act feels contrived, as one of the motivations for the shooting spree relates to a false charge of child pornography, and asking readers to believe the shooter's parents were clueless is a hard sell.Teens looking for tension and melodrama may find this to be an appealing read but only if they're willing to overlook a few plot holes along the way. Grades 9-12 For the Spartans, this could be the year their team finally makes it to state. That also seems to mean that the football players are able to get away with anything, as coaches and teachers turn a blind eye to their actions. For Donte and Brady, this isn't a bad thing; they're living like kings. But for Danny, life is miserable, and he is desperate to return to art school. Tensions build as the football team doesn't perform as expected, pushing everyone to their boiling points. Leveen uses multiple narrators to give the reader a clear picture of what's going on at the high school, from the jocks to the drama kids. Quick transitions between characters drive the plot forward, building toward a suspenseful moment hinted at in the beginning. Each narrator has a unique voice through language and formatting, with small details all adding to an exciting climax. Readers hooked by the intriguing start will stay with this all the way to the thrilling conclusion.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2018, American Library Association.)
