The Twelve Books of Christmas
(Adobe EPUB eBook, Kindle Book, OverDrive Read)
Description
San Francisco book-restoration expert Brooklyn Wainwright and her hunky security-expert husband, Derek Stone, face a locked-room murder mystery during the holidays in Scotland.
In the middle of a wonderful Christmas holiday in Dharma, Brooklyn and Derek receive a frantic phone call from their dear friend Claire in Loch Ness, Scotland. The laird of the castle, Cameron MacKinnon, has just proposed to her! They plan to be married on New Year’s Day, and they want Derek and Brooklyn to be their witnesses. And while they’re visiting, Claire hopes that Brooklyn will be able to solve a little mystery that’s occurred in the castle library—twelve very rare, very important books have gone missing.
Once in Scotland, Brooklyn starts working on the mystery of the missing books but is soon distracted by all of the thumping and bumping noises she’s been hearing in the middle of the night. You’d think the Ghost of Christmas Past had taken up residence. But when one of the guests is poisoned and another is killed by an arrow through the heart, Brooklyn and Derek know this is not the work of any ghost. Now they must race to find a killer and a book thief before another murder occurs and their friends’ bright and happy future turns dark and deadly.

Bookbinder Brooklyn Wainwright and her security-expert husband, Derek Stone, are celebrating Christmas week with her family when a friend calls from Scotland. Cameron McKinnon, Laird of Castle McKinnon, has just proposed to fiance Claire. He plans to marry after midnight on New Year's Day and wants Brooklyn and Derek to be there. Beyond the wedding, there's also the Scottish celebration of Hagmanay, and a mystery. Twelve Christmas books are missing from the castle library, and Claire needs Brooklyn's help. Brooklyn doesn't trust the new librarian, who is related to a group of powerful village women who want to take Claire down before she can marry the local laird. The wedding is already delayed by the wild Hagmanay celebration, but when Brooklyn and Derek find a body, Claire wonders if she and Cameron should get married at all. VERDICT Claire and Cameron, characters from the 15th in Carlisle's series, Little Black Book, return in this delightful cozy that combines Christmas, Scottish customs, and food. A treat for fans of the series and holiday mysteries.--Lesa Holstine

A married couple with a long history of detecting travel to Scotland for a joyous occasion only to find themselves embroiled in murder and theft. Former spy Derek Stone and his bookbinder wife, Brooklyn Wainwright, are hosting a big family Christmas dinner in California when their friend Claire phones to say that she and her Scottish beau, Cameron MacKinnon, are getting married and they want Derek, Brooklyn, and Brooklyn's parents to attend their wedding in Scotland--on New Year's Eve. Claire seems worried about 12 Christmas-themed books, some of them very valuable, that went missing from the castle library after the couple hired a librarian to organize it. Castle MacKinnon, located on the shores of Loch Ness, features lovely views and incredible food. But a major fly in the ointment is a local family who seems to think their oldest daughter, Bitsy, should be marrying Cameron and are doing everything in their power to make Claire's life a misery. Scary noises at night hint at a haunting, but Brooklyn's more concerned about Olivia, the librarian who left the library door locked and who has an odd taste in books and an interest in Wicca. Bitsy uses the Scottish New Year's tradition of welcoming neighbors as an excuse to move into the castle, forcing a postponement of the wedding. Soon after Bitsy's unwelcome arrival, a local lad is found murdered in a castle closet. Brooklyn naturally puts the missing books on the back burner, and the wedding is postponed a few more days to allow her to investigate. Even though another murder follows, all the castle's problems may be tied together if the sleuths can only untangle the clues. Pleasing characters and vivid descriptions of glorious Scotland overshadow the mystery in this quirky Christmas tale.COPYRIGHT(2023) Kirkus Reviews, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
