Hiss Me Deadly
(Kindle Book, OverDrive Read)
Description
Charlie Harris remembers Wilfred “Wil” Threadgill as one of the outsiders during high school in Athena. Although Wil was a couple of years ahead of him and his friend Melba Gilley, Melba had a big crush on Wil, who dropped out after his junior year. An aspiring musician, Wil hit the road for California and never looked back. Wil eventually became a star, fronting a band and writing award-winning songs.
Coming back to Athena to work for two weeks with students in the college music department, Wil is now the big man on campus. Not everyone is happy to have him back, however. His entourage have been the target of several acts of petty harassment. At first they are easy for Wil to shrug off, but the incidents escalate and become more troubling. When one of the band members is killed Charlie worries that Melba, now deeply involved with the man at the center of the attacks, could be in deadly danger. It is up to Charlie and Diesel to find out who hates Wil Threadgill enough to silence his song . . . forever!

A troubled soul in high school who dropped out to become a major music star, Wilfred "Wil" Threadgill has returned to town to work with students in the college music department. His band is there, too, and he's getting threats that lead to a band member's death, which sets librarian Charlie Harris into action; friend Melba still harbors feelings for Wil, and he worries that she is in danger. Of course, bewhiskered kitty Diesel will help investigate. Next in a New York Times best-selling cozy series.

Librarian Charlie Harris doesn't remember Wil Threadgill from high school, but Charlie's friend and coworker Melba Gilley had a crush on the musician, who left town 40 years ago. Now Melba and Athena College are welcoming Wil back as a successful musician to receive an honorary degree and conduct clinics. Some of Wil's former bandmates are still angry about his leaving years ago; one of them storms the stage the night of the college reception and is electrocuted when he grabs Wil's mike. While the police investigate, Charlie questions whether Wil was the actual target or if someone knew the drunken John Earl Whitaker would try to cause a scene. Melba begs Charlie to look into the case. When two of Wil's band members are attacked and a high school friend dies, Charlie begins to suspect that Wil knows more than he's telling; he might even be the perpetrator. VERDICT It's been two years since What the Cat Dragged In, the last "Cat in the Stacks" mystery. Fans of Charlie and his Maine Coon cat will be delighted to welcome them back in a cozy that combines murder, stories of Charlie's family, and hints of his upcoming marriage.--Lesa Holstine
