- fullDescription
- This classic story shows how a young woman can overcome adversity and find true happiness. It is a story of passionate love, travail, and final triumph. Orphaned at an early age, Jane Eyre leads a lonely life until she finds work as a governess at Thornfield Hall, where she meets the mysterious Mr. Rochester and sees a ghostly woman who roams the halls by night. The relationship between the heroine and Mr. Rochester is only one episode, albeit the most important, in a detailed fictional autobiography in which the author transmuted her own experience into high art. In this work, the plucky heroine is outwardly of plain appearance but possesses an indomitable spirit, a sharp wit, and great courage. She is forced to battle against the exigencies of a cruel guardian, a harsh employer, and the rigid social order that circumscribes her life and position.

- content: Orphaned, unattractive, and poor, the noble Jane Eyre overcomes her shortcomings through persistency of character and virtue. This production enlivens the classic with eloquent, expressive narration by Wanda McCaddon. She demonstrates a strong command of British accents, which she ably employs for the large cast of characters. She also includes convincing French phrases from the young Adele, which may frustrate the unfamiliar listener, but these are limited and hardly hinder the experience. McCadden's energy is sustained for the whole of this lengthy novel, bringing Bront‘'s endearing narrative to life as Jane finds a home and a man who loves her. T.D.M. - content: For a fan of Gothic romances, the opportunity to listen to a new recording of JANE EYRE is not to be passed up. British actress Juliet Stevenson gives a simply splendid narration. She gives clear voice to the spirited, intelligent, fiercely independent Jane and communicates the heroine's full range of emotions. Stevenson reads at a smooth, even pace, adding just the right amount of drama. If the new release of JANE EYRE at the movies moves many to take another look at the novel, Stevenson's masterful narration would be an excellent choice. C.R.A. Whether one treasures this classic piece of literature as an old companion or has no acquaintance with it at all, the listener is in for a treat. Reader Bentinck draws us at once into the trials assailing the orphaned and ill-treated 10-year-old Jane. Bentinck’s soft voice, flawless rhythms, and cultured British accent are exactly what’s needed to guide listeners through this heroine’s wild history of tribulations and jubilations. She portrays men, women, and children of different classes quite convincingly, and illuminates a wide range of nuanced emotions as Jane encounters hunger and cruelty as well as tender friendships at school, then a world of anger, fear, defeat, humor, sarcasm, affection, and exaltation as teacher and governess. The remarkable plot, the carefully delineated characters, and Bentinck’s acting facility make the journey an intriguing and memorable experience.

- content: Narrator Thandie Newton gives a delightful performance of this beloved classic. She delivers the voice of Jane from childhood to adulthood with elegant conviction, breezing through the dense sentences as if they were part of a contemporary novel. She also captures the voices of the many other characters, from Jane's tubercular friend, Helen Burns, to her true love, Mr. Rochester. Even some of the more difficult passages, with their pontifications about religion and morals, do not bog down the story, thanks to Newton's engaged performance. This audiobook would be an excellent way for newcomers to discover why JANE EYRE has stood the test of time, and would also be a lovely reminder for those familiar with this great work. M.M.G. - content: Narrator Alison Larkin's mellifluous voice and expressive tone are the perfect accompaniment to this acclaimed bildungsroman about "poor, plain and little" orphaned Jane Eyre and her eternally captivating romance with Edward Rochester. Larkin takes extraordinary care to elicit the full spectrum of emotions at play here, while conveying the gothic elements and psychological realism underpinning this classic. Listeners will be riveted by her portrayals of Jane's intelligence, integrity, and forthright manner, and of Rochester's intense and sometimes playful demeanor. Her nuanced characterizations of supporting characters of all ages, genders, and social classes are perceptive and revelatory. Larkin's thoughtful and subtly dramatic performance allows listeners to be fully engaged with the admirably resilient Jane throughout this delightful production. M.J.
