"I couldn't put it down." — Joseph Finder
In a world of wealth and privilege, a killer is hiding . . .
The internationally bestselling author of The Last Mrs. Parrish follows that success with an addictive novel filled with shocking twists about the aftermath of a brutal high-society murder.
Dr. Kate English has it all. Not only is she the heiress to a large fortune; she has a gorgeous husband and daughter, a high-flying career, and a beautiful home anyone would envy.
But all that changes the night Kate's mother, Lily, is found dead, brutally murdered in her own home. Heartbroken and distraught, Kate reaches out to her estranged best friend, Blaire Barrington, who rushes to her side for the funeral, where the years of distance between them are forgotten in a moment.
That evening, Kate's grief turns to horror when she receives an anonymous text: You think you're sad now, just wait. By the time I'm finished with you, you'll wish you had been buried today. More than ever, Kate needs her old friend's help.
Once Blaire decides to take the investigation into her own hands, it becomes clear that all is not as it seems in Baltimore high society. As infidelity, lies, and betrayals come to light, and tensions rise to a boiling point, she begins to alienate Kate's friends and relatives with her relentless, accusatory questions, as she tries to find Lily's killer. The murderer could be anyone—friend, neighbor, loved one. But whoever it is, it's clear that Kate is next on their list. . .
In The Last Time I Saw You, Liv Constantine takes the lightning pace of The Last Mrs. Parrish and raises the stakes, creating an exquisitely tension-filled and absorbing tale of psychological suspense in which innocent lives—and one woman's sanity—hang in the balance.

In this uneven page-turner from the pseudonymous Constantine (The Last Mrs. Parrish), blueblood Baltimore surgeon Kate English’s enviable life implodes with the shocking murder of her mother, a beloved philanthropist—followed by chilling texts insinuating she’s next. To make matters worse, Kate wants her architect husband, who she’s convinced has been cheating on her, to move out of the family mansion, but he insists on staying so he can help protect her and their four-year-old daughter. About the only bright spot is Kate’s unexpected reconciliation after the funeral with long-estranged childhood best friend Blaire Barrington, who offers to apply the detective skills she’s acquired writing a bestselling mystery series to the case. Though increasingly ingenious twists only spotlight the flimsiness of the players, Constantine (sisters Lynne and Valerie Constantine) expertly ratchets up the tension as the nursery-rhyme-referencing threats mount, leading to a security breach that strikes perilously close to home. Those who value plot over character development in their psychological thrillers will be satisfied. Agent: Bernadette Baker-Baughman, Victoria Sanders & Assoc.

- content: Using a wide range of voices, narrator Julia Whelan navigates the riveting turns in this thriller. It's challenging enough for Dr. Kate English to grieve for her murdered mother. Then she starts receiving notes filled with twisted threats and begins emotionally unraveling. Whelan keeps to a straight tone for the narrative, saving her theatrical voices for the dialogue. Kate and her friend Blair have slightly different tones, and all the men are differentiated perfectly. Kate's young daughter has an appropriately higher pitch, and her father has a slightly hoarse voice. Minor characters all have distinctive traits. Many interact during the same scenes, and Whelan never misses a beat in keeping the details clear. A wonderful example of a story enhanced by a creative narration. When her mother is found brutally murdered, Dr. Kate English learns that career, wealth, and status are not enough to insulate her from devastating loss. Following the funeral, Kate receives macabre warnings that her own life is in danger. Despite heightened home security and support from her friend Blaire, with whom she's recently reunited, Kate remains frightened and begins to suspect those in her inner circle, wondering if the same person responsible for her mother's death might now be tormenting her. Could it be Kate's father, who was recently heard arguing with her mother; Kate's estranged husband or his presumed mistress; an eccentric friend with a history of stalking; Kate's daughter's nanny; or a stranger with a vendetta? As the threats intensify, Kate and Blaire (a best-selling mystery writer) work together to unravel the riddle before Kate comes to harm. VERDICT Sisters Lynne and Valerie Constantine, under the pseudonym Liv Constantine (The Last Mrs. Parrish), have crafted another clever whodunit jam-packed with enough twists, turns, and secrets to keep avid thriller readers second-guessing until the bitter end. "Baltimore Heiress Bludgeoned to Death in Her Home"--and now the killer is after the dead woman's daughter."Only days ago, Kate had been mulling over what to get her mother for Christmas. She couldn't have known that instead of choosing a gift, she'd be picking out her casket." Unfortunately, things are about to get much worse. Immediately after the funeral, Kate receives a text. "You think you're sad now, just wait. By the time I'm finished with you, you'll wish you had been buried today." That same night, she finds three mice in her bathroom sink with their eyes gouged out, accompanied by another alarming message. "They all ran after a charming life / he took their eyes with a carving knife / Did you ever see such a beautiful sight / As three dead mice." Kate and her semi-estranged husband, Simon, hire round-the-clock security guards, since one thing these people have is plenty of money. Also Ivy League degrees, designer clothes, a nanny, a cook, a beach house, a foundation, and big, successful careers. Simon is an architect, and Kate is a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon, or at least she's supposed to be--there's not a single detail that makes this feel believable, unless "she'd worked her butt off to get into med school and to ace the MCATs" counts. Maybe complaints about the money-porn aspect of the book seem picky, but the whodunit aspect, which is where it lives or dies, is not much more substantial. Suspicious details pile up so quickly against the various suspects that one never actually suspects them, and then so much backstory has to be shoehorned in at the last minute to support the solution to the puzzle that it's not very satisfying. The two sisters who write as Constantine (The Last Mrs. Parrish, 2017) can do better than this.COPYRIGHT(2019) Kirkus Reviews, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

The second "Last" domestic thriller (after The Last Mrs. Parrish, 2017) from Constantine (the pen name of sisters Lynne and Valerie Constantine) once again revolves around a complicated friendship between two women in an affluent setting. Dr. Kate English, a woman who has it all, reunites with her estranged best friend, successful crime novelist Blaire Barrington, after the shocking murder of Kate's socialite mother, and the narrative of their shared past sets a there is something missing here tone. Blaire's investigative skills are useful in unmasking the monster behind the threats and gruesome gifts Kate subsequently receives. Kate totally unravels as her faith in her marriage is shaken to the core, and her father's behavior is called into question. And why had her mother planned to change her will? An absorbing tale for readers willing to surrender to some unlikely character behaviors and an occasionally predictable plot, although fans of Gone Girl and its successors will appreciate an ending that puts a pricey shoe on one foot and then changes it again . . . and again.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)
