Description
#1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Charlaine Harris returns to her "gripping, twisty" (Karin Slaughter, New York Times bestselling author of Pieces of Her) alternate history of the United States where magic is an acknowledged but despised power in this fourth installment of the Gunnie Rose series.
Felicia, Lizbeth Rose's half-sister and a student at the Grigori Rasputin school in San Diego—capital of the Holy Russian Empire—is caught between her own secrets and powerful family struggles. As a granddaughter of Rasputin, she provides an essential service to the hemophiliac Tsar Alexei, providing him the blood transfusions that keep him alive. Felicia is treated like nonentity at the bedside of the tsar, and at the school she's seen as a charity case with no magical ability. But when Felicia is snatched outside the school, the facts of her heritage begin to surface. Felicia turns out to be far more than the Russian Mexican Lizbeth rescued. As Felicia's history unravels and her true abilities become known, she becomes under attack from all directions. Only her courage will keep her alive.

In Dean's big, intriguingly premised debut, Devon is part of a venerable clan belonging to The Book Eaters--instead of food, they munch thrillers, romance, and, when they misbehave, dusty dictionaries--and she's terrified to learn that her son is born hungering not for paper, printing, and binding but human minds (150,000-copy first printing). In The Women Could Fly, a dystopian work from Rumpus features editor Giddings, the mother of a young Black woman named Josephine is long vanished--was she a witch? Was she murdered?--and if Josephine doesn't marry soon, she will be forced to enroll in a registry that will effectively blot out her freedom (75,000-copy first printing). In Harris's The Serpent in Heaven, a sequel to The Russian Cage, Felicia is set upon by her estranged family of Mexican wizards and discovers that she is the most powerful witch of her generation (75,000-copy first printing). In Don't Fear the Reaper, Jones's follow-up to the LJ best-booked My Heart Is a Chainsaw, an exonerated Jade Daniels returns home from prison just as convicted serial killer Dark Mill South arrives to avenge 38 Dakota men hanged in 1862 (100,000-copy first printing). In this latest from the multi-award-nominated Kuang, a Chinese boy orphaned in 1828 Canton (now Guangzhou) is brought to London and eventually enters Oxford's Royal Institute of Translation--called Babel--which doubles as a center for magic and compels him to work in support of Britain's imperial ambitions in China (125,000-copy first printing). Modesitt continues his newly launched "Grand Illusion" series with Steffan Dekkard joining the Council of Sixty-Six as Councilor--the first to be an Isolate, which makes him impervious to emotional manipulation but could lead to his assassination (100,000-copy first printing). Author of the Slate best-booked Quick, Owens has Kate planning to hold her wedding at a church called Small Angels in the town where she once found shelter with the Gonne sisters, little realizing that they've been tasked with keeping a marauding ghost from invading the village--and they're falling down on the job. Winner of a BCALA Self-Publishing EBook Award for Song of Blood and Stone, one ofTime's 100 Best Fantasy Books of All Time, Penelope returns with The Monsters We Defy, whose heroine pays off a debt to the Empress ruling the spirit world by agreeing to steal a wealthy woman's ring in 1925 Washington, DC (25,000-copy first printing). From Valdes, author of the LJ best-booked Chilling Effects, Fault Tolerance brings back Capt. Eva Innocente and the raucous crew of La Sirena Negra to counter an anonymous threat that could lead to the death of billions (50,000-copy first printing). Dragon/Nebula finalist Virdi launches a new series with The First Binding, featuring an Immortal disguised as a storyteller--and he's here to relate how he unleashed the First Evil on the world (175,000-copy first printing). The MMU Novella Award-winning West goes full length with Face, set in a genetically engineered society where the perfect profile buys fame, wealth, and power but not happiness for Schuyler and Madeleine Burroughs (60,000-copy first printing).

Series heroine Lizbeth Rose lets go of the reins for Harris’s action-packed fourth Gunnie Rose alternate history (after The Russian Cage), which sees Lizbeth’s half sister, Felicia, taking over as narrator. Rescued by Lizbeth and her partner, Eli, from a life of poverty in Mexico, Felicia is initially thrilled to find a home—and regular food—at the Rasputin School for Grigoris in the Holy Russian Empire, even though her spot there hinges on her being a regular blood donor to the tsar. As one of the few living descendants of Rasputin, her blood alone may heal what ails the ruler. Her peaceful new life is interrupted, however, when she’s kidnapped. She escapes her abductors—only for the school to be attacked in their attempts to get her back. Felicia’s responding fury causes magic more powerful than she knew she had to explode from inside her, making her realize that her role in things to come may be more critical than she knew. Readers may initially be disappointed not to hear from Lizbeth, but Felicia proves an equally strong and magnetic heroine who’s sure to win fans over in the end. This takes the series in an exciting new direction. Agent: Joshua Bilmes, JABberwocky Literary.

Felicia Karkarova is connected to many influential people: her half-sister Lizbeth Rose is a famous gunslinger and married to Eli, a Russian grigori (magic user) and prince. Felicia is also a granddaughter of Rasputin. Her blood helps to keep Tsar Alexei alive with needed transfusions. Yet, somehow, she is not acknowledged at all. Enrolled in the Grigori Rasputin School in the Holy Russian Empire (formerly California and Oregon), Felicia is treated as a charity case with no magic and shunned by most of her classmates and teachers. When Felicia is taken by strangers outside of her school, it opens the door to the truth about her heritage--and her powers. As she tries to fend off her pursuers, Felicia must find the strength and courage to trust others around her, and herself, to survive. The alternate-universe United States setting and repudiated magical system create a complex backdrop for this new character arc. VERDICT The fourth "Gunnie Rose" novel (after The Russian Cage) moves the setting from the rural west to an urban city, but contains just as much intrigue and action as the previous books.--Kristi Chadwick
