The Pepper Thai Cookbook: Family Recipes from Everyone's Favorite Thai Mom
(Adobe EPUB eBook, Kindle Book, OverDrive Read)
IACP AWARD FINALIST • ONE OF THE BEST COOKBOOKS OF THE YEAR: Time Out, Food52
Whether she’s frying up a batch of her crispy-garlicky wings for John’s football Sundays or making Chrissy her favorite afternoon snack—instant ramen noodles with ground pork, cabbage, scallions, and cilantro—Pepper Teigen loves feeding her famously fabulous family. Through these eighty recipes, Pepper teaches you how to make all her hits. You’ll find playful twists on Thai classics, such as Fried Chicken Larb, which is all crunch with lots of lime, chile, and fish sauce, and Pad Thai Brussels Sprouts, which bring the fun tastes and textures of pad thai to a healthy sheet of pan-roasted vegetables. And there are the traditional dishes Pepper grew up with, like khao tod crispy rice salad and tom zapp hot and sour soup.
Pepper shares stories about her life, too, such as how she used to sell sweet-savory kanom krok coconut-and-corn pancakes to commuters when she was ten years old in Thailand (now she makes them with her granddaughter, Luna, as a treat) and how, once she moved to the United States, she would cobble together tastes of home with ingredients she could find in her new homeland, like turning shredded cabbage and carrots into a mock-papaya salad. Influenced by Thailand, California, and everywhere in between, Pepper’s mouthwatering recipes and sharp sense of humor will satisfy anyone craving a taste of something sensational, whether that’s a peek into America’s most-talked- about family’s kitchen or a rich and spicy spoonful of Massaman Beef Curry.

- bioText: Originally from Thailand, Pepper Teigen moved to the United States as a young woman after getting married. She longed for the flavors of home and so she started cooking Thai-ish food using American ingredients to substitute for Thai ones she couldn’t find in grocery stores. It was while she was working at her then-husband’s bar in Washington State that she earned the nickname Pepper, because the patrons always saw her snacking on fresh, spicy chiles. Now, Pepper lives in Southern California with her daughter, Chrissy, son-in-law, John, and her grandchildren, Luna and Miles. She is prominently featured on Cravings by Chrissy Teigen, as well as in both of Chrissy’s bestselling cookbooks, where she shares her recipes, wit, and wisdom.

“Cooking Thai food shouldn’t be scary,” writes Teigen, the mother of supermodel and fellow cookbook writer Chrissy Teigen, in her exciting debut. A Thai native who’s been cooking since childhood, Teigen presents more than 80 recipes, many of which are Thai staples such as chicken satay with peanut sauce, sticky caramelized shrimp lettuce wraps, and green papaya salad. Other recipes include Teigen’s creative riffs, such as pad Thai brussels sprouts and stir-fried spaghetti with chile jam and sun-dried tomatoes. Along with the recipes, Teigen shares fun stories of living with Chrissy; her husband, John Legend; and their children (she named a broccoli beef recipe after her granddaughter, Luna, because “It’s one of her favorite foods, but that is a gene she obviously inherited from John”), as well as stories of Thailand (“Growing up in Korat, my grandma would make these,” she reminisces as she introduces fried curry meatballs). Teigen thoughtfully provides plenty of substitutions for readers who may have trouble finding Thai ingredients, such as DIY dark soy sauce and toasted rice powder. This is a great guide for readers ready to take the plunge into Thai cooking.
