Baegert was a Jesuit missionary in Lower California from 1751 until the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1768. In this account he seeks to disprove the prevailing myth of California as land of plenty, emphasizing instead the merciless heat, dangerous animals, hostile terrain, and untrustworthiness of its inhabitants. The book is nonetheless filled with valuable ethnographical and historical information.
