Antonia Murphy, you might say, is an unlikely farmer. Born and bred in San Francisco, she spent much of her life as a liberal urban cliché, and her interactions with the animal kingdom rarely extended past dinner.
But then she became a mother. And when her eldest son was born with a rare, mysterious genetic condition, she and her husband, Peter, decided it was time to slow down and find a supportive community. So the Murphys moved to Purua, New Zealand—a rural area where most residents maintained private farms, complete with chickens, goats, and (this being New Zealand)  sheep. The result was a comic disaster, and when one day their son had a medical crisis, it was also a little bit terrifying.
Dirty Chick chronicles Antonia’s first year of life as an artisan farmer. Having bought into the myth that farming is a peaceful, fulfilling endeavor that allows one to commune with nature and live the way humans were meant to live, Antonia soon realized  that the reality is far dirtier and way more disgusting than she ever imagined.  Among the things she learned the hard way: Cows are prone to a number of serious bowel ailments, goat mating involves an astounding amount of urine, and roosters are complete and unredeemable assholes.
But for all its traumas, Antonia quickly embraced farm life, getting drunk on homemade wine (it doesn’t cause hangovers!), making cheese (except for the cat hair, it’s a tremendously satisfying hobby), and raising a baby lamb (which was addictively cute until it grew into a sheep). Along the way, she met locals as colorful as the New Zealand countryside, including a seasoned farmer who took a dim view of Antonia’s novice attempts, a Maori man so handy he could survive a zombie apocalypse, and a woman proficient in sculpting alpaca heads made from their own wool.'
Part family drama, part cultural study, and part cautionary tale, Dirty Chick will leave you laughing, cringing, and rooting for an unconventional heroine.

     An "artsy San Francisco dilettante" tells the story of how she traded her urban existence for a life of "chasing cows...and executing chickens" in rural New Zealand.In 2004, Murphy and her husband decided to move abroad to New Zealand, where Murphy gave birth to a developmentally delayed son named Silas and, later, a little "savage" of a daughter named Miranda. When it came time for Silas to start his education, the family moved to Purua, a tiny community that was home to a school where "no one would judge [him]" for being different. American bohemians with romantic visions of country living, they took up residence on a rented farm. Strange accents, Murphy's own peculiar habit of wearing Halloween animal ears, and lack of knowledge regarding what it really took to raise livestock and grow their own food soon made the Murphys the object of curiosity and scorn. The arrival of a farm-savvy niece from New York proved the family's salvation. She helped the Murphys persevere through misadventures involving baby calves with long, black tongues, alpacas that looked like teddy bears but behaved atrociously, sheep that required "ovine Brazilian[s]" and a dog that ate feces. Stripped of their initial illusions, Murphy and her husband learned that "[r]eal country life...involved blood, shit, and worms." But it also involved simple yet profound pleasures, such as consuming their homemade artisanal wines and cheeses with the colorful group of expatriates and locals who eventually became family friends. Murphy's book presents an unsentimental, at times unapologetically graphic, treatment of farm life. At the same time, it offers a comic yet thoroughly wise perspective on what it means to start over in a new country and live close to a natural world that is anything but romantic. Warm, funny and touching.

     Through a combination of events ranging from a presidential election to increasing San Francisco real-estate prices and a deep love for Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movies, Murphy and her family found themselves settling in New Zealand in 2004. A rocky transition to rural life followed, with a host of high jinks involving such classic challenges as recalcitrant livestock and eccentric neighbors, along with experiments in home wine making. Murphy does branch out a bit from similar titles by sharing more than a few graphic insights into animal reproduction (readers beware: there is nothing pretty about duck, chicken, or goat mating behavior), but mostly this a typical entry in the perennially popular city-dweller-goes-country subgenre of memoir. No new ground is broken, but it is always amusing to chuckle through the misadventures of others. It all works out in the end, and Murphy provides a few diversionary hours for armchair travelers who likely will never chuck it all to live the Green Acres life but do enjoy reading about it.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2014, American Library Association.)
