Description
From the New York Times bestselling author of Good Grief comes a "winsome story with charm to burn about second acts and second chances" (Jennifer Weiner, New York Times bestselling author) that asks: How soon is too soon to fall in love again?
The last thing Rudy expected was to wake up one Saturday morning, a widower at fifty-four-years-old. Now, ten months after the untimely death of his beloved wife, he's still not sure how to move on from the tragedy—but his new job is helping.

After being downsized, Rudy turned to his first love: the piano. Some people might be embarrassed to work as the piano player at Nordstrom, but for Rudy, there's joy in bringing a little music into the world. And it doesn't hurt that Sasha, the Hungarian watch clerk who is finally divorcing her no-good husband, finds time to join him at the bench every now and then.

Just when Rudy and Sasha's relationship begins to deepen, the police come to the store with a shocking update about Rudy's wife's premature death, and now they believe his actions are suspicious enough to warrant a second look. With Sasha's husband suddenly reappearing, and Rudy's daughter confronting her own marital problems, life suddenly becomes more complicated than Rudy or Sasha could have ever imagined.

Perfect for fans of Jennifer Weiner and Fredrik Backman, Me for You is an "exquisitely wrought window into an oft-ignored subject, mid-life love, and a reminder that grief and joy can live side by side." (Michelle Richmond, New York Times bestselling author). Exploring the tender humor of two people being newly single again, Lolly Winston's latest is a funny, wry, and heartfelt examination of finding love when it's least expected.

A middle-aged man struggles to reconcile romantic feelings for a co-worker with the devotion he still feels to his late wife. The story opens as Rudy Knowles relaxes in bed, chatting for the first 10 minutes of the morning with his wife, Bethany. He hasn't yet realized that she died during the night. When he finally notices that Bethany is not breathing, Rudy mobilizes into action, attempting frantic CPR and calling an ambulance. Unfortunately, it's too late to revive Bethany, who had a heart attack. Following this harrowing scene, the story jumps forward by nearly a year. Rudy is working as a pianist in Nordstrom's, a job that was intended as a temporary gig following a setback in his finance career, but the loss of his wife has left him too drained to make any professional movement. During his time at the store, he forms a friendship with Sasha, a woman from the watch department who has suffered losses of her own. Rudy is surprised to notice his interest in Sasha gradually turning romantic, and he grapples with the question of whether he is ready to date another woman. Just as he begins to pursue Sasha, a detective appears at the store looking for Rudy. Detective Jensen tells Rudy that Bethany's death may have been murder, and suddenly, all the progress Rudy had made toward coping with her loss is shattered. Rudy's thoughts and actions grow increasingly self-destructive, and his future becomes anything but certain. As he struggles with staggering sorrow, readers will wonder along with Rudy whether he can ever recover. Told in the third person, the narrative shifts periodically from Rudy to Sasha, bringing Sasha's struggles to the foreground, as well. Through the tragedies each character has suffered, the author highlights the surprising and long-lasting ways in which grief can shock and debilitate its bearers. The story uses quiet prose and unexpected moments of gentle humor to illustrate the importance of human connection during trying times. This is a difficult and emotional tale in which grief becomes a character of its own.A slow-moving but poignant story about loss, unexpected connections, and the circuitous path toward healing.

Rudy didn't intend to be a 54-year-old widower, but that's exactly what he has become after the premature death of his wife last year. Lonely and downsized out of his job, he spends his days playing piano at a department store, glad to return to the music he loves but still having trouble moving forward. It turns out that he may not be the only one, and he begins developing a relationship with Sasha, a Hungarian saleswoman at the store, who is grieving in her own way. Things seem to be looking up until he receives the news that his wife's death may have been the result of a homicide, sending him spinning back into despair with no choice but to accept help. Rudy's fondness for Sasha and their efforts to support each other paint a portrait of a sweet couple who learn it's okay to grieve. While the plot twist of the homicide investigation comes across as a bit odd and distracting, this gentle story of finding hope after pain will please readers of Fredrik Backman, Muriel Barbery, and Phaedra Patrick.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)

Fifty-four-year-old Rudy Knowles was downsized from his Silicon Valley tech firm. His hospital pharmacist wife, Bethany, is supportive as Rudy takes a job playing the piano at Nordstrom in the mall. Then 54-year-old Bee dies in her sleep. Nearly a year later and still overcome by grief, Rudy can't quite see any reason to get out of bed--not his wonderful if buttoned-up daughter Cecelia; his effervescent young granddaughter, Keira; not even his Nordstrom coworker Sasha, a Hungarian migr who loves Rudy's renditions of Chopin while contending with her own unimaginable loss. Now the police think Bee might have been murdered by a hospital employee. A rest for Rudy is definitely in order. Winston (Good Grief) continues to drive home the entangled feelings of loss and loneliness following a tragedy. She allows Rudy his self-pity and anger as his emotions are part of learning how to go on without the love of his life. VERDICT Fans of Jonathan Tropper and Winston's other books will want to see Rudy safely along his journey. [See Prepub Alert 10/1/18; library marketing.]--Bette-Lee Fox, Library Journal
