Description
The seventh and final volume in Jeffrey Archer's New York Times bestselling Clifton Chronicles series, This Was a Man, brings the epic saga of the Clifton family's love, loss, and ambition to a dazzling conclusion.
Harry Clifton's story began in 1920, as a dock worker in England, and now he is set to write his magnum opus. As he reflects on his days, the lives of his family continue to unfold, unravel, and intertwine in ways no one could have imagined . . .
Harry's wife Emma, who just completed her time at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, receives a surprise call from Margaret Thatcher. Meanwhile, Giles Barrington discovers a shocking truth about his wife, Karin. Sebastian Clifton becomes chairman of Farthings Kaufman bank, but only after Hakim Bishara's abrupt resignation. Sebastian's daughter Jessica is expelled from school, but her aunt Grace comes to the rescue. And Lady Virginia, who is set to flee the country to avoid her creditors, finds an opportunity to clear her debts after the Duchess of Hertford dies—and a way to finally trump the Cliftons and Barringtons.

Archer wraps up the Clifton Chronicles with this seventh and final entry in the series. It's now the 1980s, and every character has something exciting on the horizonEmma Clifton has been personally appointed by Margaret Thatcher as an undersecretary in the House of Lords. Emma's brother, Giles Barrington, is quite chagrined by the news, as they are in opposite parties. Emma's husband, Harry, has wrapped up the last book in his long-running mystery series and is eager to start something completely different. Lady Virginia Fenwick, the perpetual thorn in the side of the Barrington clan, continues her underhanded scheming (and finally receives her comeuppance). All of the trademark Archer storytelling elements are here in abundancecliff-hanger chapters, mistaken identities, deaths, and one red herring after another. To be sure, they are exactly what his readers expect (and want). But Archer leaps right into things with virtually no backstory and a relentless pacing that may keep even devoted series fans scratching their heads, wondering if they've missed something. That won't keep them from reading on, however, and being rewarded with a satisfying conclusion to the saga.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2016, American Library Association.)
